The Hammond, Indiana military installation has been a part of the United States Army for over eighty years. The original location was on the banks of the White River. Today, the installation occupies a large tract of land in east-central Indiana. It is one of three garrison installations in central Indiana and one of four army post locations in Indiana. In 1862, General Andrew Johnson ordered an expansion of the army in Hammond. A new fortification was built at present-day downtown Hammond to protect against Confederate attacks from that area. The first soldiers stationed at Hammond were troops from Kentucky and Tennessee who had arrived to help with the Civil War effort. By 1865, when Union troops took control of Indianapolis, General Johnson ordered all military posts in central Indiana closed except for Hammond which remained open until 1868 when it was transferred to Fort Meade as part of a larger reorganization within the Union army.
