The history of Evansville, Indiana is one that has been full of love, pain and adventure. The city was founded by Andrew and Judith Evans in 1814 as a small Indian village known as “Venango”. The couple soon realized that they could not live alone in the small town and so they purchased a tract of land east of present-day Indianapolis to create what would become Evansville. The town quickly became an important center for trade and commerce and its population grew rapidly. In 1827, the first courthouse was built in what is now downtown Evansville. By 1830, the town had two churches, three schools, two hotels and several businesses. In 1836, the area around present-day downtown was designated as a parkland area for residents to use for recreation purposes. Over time, Evansville grew into one of the most populous cities in Michigan and Illinois. Despite its growing popularity, life in Evansville was often tough. There were few jobs available for people during the early 1800s and many people lived from hand to mouth. For some reason or another, however, the citizens of Evansville never considered themselves apart from their fellow Americans during this time period. They worked together hard to build something great together – something that still exists today! Despite these challenges though, things eventually turned around for Evansville when entrepreneur Elijah Boudreau arrived in the city in 1851 looking to start a new business opportunity in central Indiana. After seeing how successful Boudreau’s business had been at home he decided to move his operation downstate to Evansville so he could continue growth there with more employees than ever before! This infusion of new blood helped jumpstart the economy and make Evansville one of America’s most thriving cities by 1860!
