The Washington, Illinois Volunteer Infantry was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The regiment was organized at Camp Butler, Cook County, Illinois on October 26, 1861 and mustered into service on November 3. The regiment was assigned to the 1st Brigade, 2nd Division of the II Corps under General Ulysses S. Grant. The Washington, Illinois Volunteers fought in several battles during the war including First Bull Run (May 27-29), Antietam (September 17-19), Fredericksburg (December 12-15), and Chancellorsville (April 9-11). In total, they lost 25 men killed or mortally wounded and 85 men missing in action.
Washington is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 22,627 at the 2010 census. It is the tenth-largest city in Illinois and the largest city in northwest Indiana. Washington was founded by General Joseph K. Lyon on December 3, 1814 as part of the Northwest Territory. The name "Washington" originated from General Lyon's use of the word "Washacat". The first full stop on the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad was at West Side Highway and Washtenaw Avenue in Washington on November 15, 1872. This location became known as interchange 1 for passenger trains travelling between Chicago and Indianapolis or Detroit. In 1909, Washington joined with other cities to form a new metropolitan area called Metropolitan Washington which included all of Cook County north of Interstate 95 and all of Wayne County east of I-95. In 1995, it merged with St. Louis to form Greater St Louis Incorporated, one of six metropolitan areas forming the St Louis–Metropolitan Area (SLMA). On January 1st, 2002 SLMA officially became an independent city within Greater StLouis Incorporated when it adopted its own charter

Army gift history begins with the Revolutionary War. For over two decades, the United States Army had been fighting for independence from Great Britain. The war was expensive and time-consuming, and many soldiers were not able to afford new weapons or equipment. In 1775, Congress passed the Continental Congress Resolution providing for a fund to be established “to provide money for the purchase of arms and other munitions of war”. This fund would eventually become known as the United States Military Academy (USMA). In 1776, President George Washington appointed John Adams as Secretary of War. Adams was tasked with finding ways to improve army morale and increase troop recruitment. He developed a system called “The Program” which awarded troops bonuses based on their performance in battle. The program helped turn the tide of battle and led to increased troop numbers and morale in the army. In 1779, General George Washington became president because of his predecessor's death. He quickly realized that he needed a better army to fight against British forces abroad. He appointed James Kieft as General in Chief of the American Forces in Europe (AFCE), which was responsible for recruiting new soldiers into the American military overseas. Kieft's efforts paid off; within three years, AFCE had tripled its size from 5,000 men to 20,000 men! In 1783, Captain John Smith founded West Point academy in upstate New York as an answer to America's lack of warriors at home. Smith believed that education could lead to success in warfare and he wanted his students to be able to think both offensively and defensively when they faced enemy forces
Washington, Illinois was founded by the United States in 1787 as a small town on the banks of the Chicago River. It grew rapidly due to its location on the Mississippi River and its access to trade with Europe. In 1818, Washington became a state of the United States and during its early years it relied heavily on imported goods from France and England. However, after Illinois became an independent country in 1819, it began to export goods itself. By 1840, Washington had become one of America's most prosperous cities with a population of over 100,000 people. Due to its strategic location on the great river system linking North America with Europe and Africa, Washington played an important role in American history both during and after the Revolutionary War. The city was also home to some of America's leading political leaders including James K. Polk who served as President for two terms from 1849-1853; Abraham Lincoln who was elected as president twice (1865-1868 and 1880-1884); and Franklin D. Roosevelt who served as president for four terms from 1933-1945). In addition, Washington is known for its many famous landmarks such as Mount Rushmore National Monument which is located near downtown; The White House which is located within walking distance of Capitol Hill; The US Capitol Building which is one of America's most visited tourist attractions; Arlington Cemetery which contains some of America's largest burial grounds'; The John F Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum which is located just outside OfDowntownWashington;[1]andThe Stanley Kubrick Museum which is located adjacent to Warner Bros studios in Burbank California].
Washington was founded on December 4, 1792 by George Washington and his fellow Continental Army officers. The first white settler in what is now Washington County was Abram Morse. On July 3, 1814, the U.S. Congress created a new county named for Washington in order to help farmers who were struggling to make a living in the area. The name of the town that grew up around Washington was also changed to Alexandria in 1832 because of its proximity to Washington City and because Alexander Macomb had donated land for the town's development.
