Tinley Park was founded by Daniel Tinley in 1868 as a small town on the banks of the Des Plaines River adjacent to what is now Northwest Side Chicago. In 1876, Tinley named his community after William McKinney, who had served as United States Representative from Illinois from 1865 to 1869 and then as Secretary of State under President Ulysses S. Grant. McKinney donated land for the new town and tinkerer Samuel Tinsmith built the first schoolhouse in what is now TinLEY PARK Elementary School building on West Town Drive in 1877-78. In 1886, Mayor George Papp announced that he would establish an agricultural research station at Elmhurst College near Lawndale to improve crop production in northeast Cook County; this led to development of Elmhurst Farms which included several thousand acres (2 km²) of forested property along its border with TinLEY PARK across I-95 from Lawndale until it merged into University Village developments east of Loop 610 South in 1998

Tinley Park's history dates back to 1847 when it was part of the Towns of Northfield and South Elgin. In 1868, Tinley Park became a village and in 1893 it was annexed by Chicago. The city was renamed after General George Armstrong Custer on July 16, 1897. It lost its independent identity as an agricultural center following World War II until new economic opportunities attracted businesses and residents to the city in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The first settlers arrived in what is now Tinley Park from Indiana in 1847. They were pioneers who founded a small community called Mount Morris on the bluffs overlooking Lake Michigan about four miles north of town. There are numerous stories about these early settlers – some say they were motivated by greed or hatred for Native Americans; others claim they were drawn to this region because of its natural resources such as clay that could be used to make bricks or pottery; still others claimed Native American help brought them here while exploring could have been due to chance encounters with traders during their travels through this area near present-day Chicago or even more likely due to military action around Lake Michigan which led to increased trade along this stretch of waterway during those days Bricks made from tin ore mined nearby were used for building roads and houses throughout much of America during the mid 1800s but not so much here because brickmaking requires lime which wasn’t available close by until white men started importing it from England starting in 1795 . Eventually different industries took root here like automotive parts manufacturing (1948), medical equipment manufacturing (1959), electrical equipment manufacturing (1968) before becoming known today as information technology companies like Microsoft, Intel etc In 1996 City Council passed an ordinance declaring October 15th “George Armstrong Custer Day” recognizing all things related to General Custer including his battle with Sitting Bull at Little Bighorn on October 15th , 150 years ago . On that date various events were held throughout the city honoring members of local historical societies who took part including a parade down Beech Avenue followed by lunch at Ford’s Theatre ..... Today there are several museums located within walking distance including Northwestern University’s McCormick Place Museum District which has rotating exhibits on downtown Chicago history as well as art galleries downtown Tinley Park also has two professional sports teams – The Bulls (NBA) and The Blackhawks (NFL).
