The community's prominence increased with the arrival of railroads in 1872 and 1886, which made it accessible to larger populations outside of Cook County. In 1898, General Motors moved its manufacturing plant from Flint Michigan to Tinley Park after receiving a government grant to build there. In 1914, Tinley Park became one of only two cities in Illinois to have an all-electric streetlights system; this occurred during World War I when Tinley Park joined other Midwestern cities in supporting military efforts. The name "Tinley" comes from the town of Tinley in England. It was named for David tinney, an early settler in what is now Tinley Park. The first store in Tinley Park opened on North Avenue in 1868. By 1870, there were eight stores and twelve businesses with a population of 20 people. That year, Abraham Lincoln made his speech from the steps of the State Capitol in which he touted Illinois' progress as a result of its new state government and its ability to attract "the best and brightest." One hundred years later, that progress has continued with big waves of migration - many Anglo-Saxon Protestants coming to work in mills while also purchasing land around Tinley Park for their homes. This community has seen some dramatic changes over time: Today's downtown district is full of high-rise buildings that date back to the late 1800s when much of this land was still rural; two large reservoirs provide drinking water for residents; and new subdivisions have been built near Lake Michigan just south of town proper along Northwest Highway - making it easy to commute into Chicago or down Interstate 95 to see all that Chicago has to offer since even before the city was founded by Native Americans.
