Streator, Illinois (population: 9,711) is a city in the Chicago metropolitan area. It is the seat of Cook County and has a population of over 21,000. The city was founded in 1836 by David Streator as a post office on the east side of what is now River Road. The first settler in town was Nicholas Doherty, who arrived with his family from Clarendon Township in March 1836. Doherty's father had been a Capt. John Doherty and his uncle Patrick Doherty had also come from Clarendon Township. In 1837, David Streator moved to town from New York City and began to build a store and home on Main Street which he named "Streator's Store." In 1840, David Streator married Rachel Cushman and they started to raise children there. They were the first couple to live in town full-time. In 1861, when Illinois became a state, Streator became its second citysite after Chicago; he served as its first mayor from 1865-1867 and again from 1870-1871. He also served on the boards of trustees for Reformed Baptist Church (now First United Methodist Church), Zion Lutheran School District #5 (now part of Griggs Park Elementary School), Cook County Forest Preserve District No 1 (now part of Lincoln Hills Elementary School), Cook County Soil Conservation District No 2 (now part of Deerfield Beach Elementary School), and Cook County Flood Control District No 2A (now part of Evergreen Park Elementary School). The city grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to immigration by Germans and Irishmen fleeing political turmoil in Europe; by 1900 it had over 50% Italian ancestry compared to just 10% German heritage nationally. By 1920 Italians constituted 60% of the population while Germans represented 30%. By 1930 Polish Americans made up 20% of the population while Irish Americans made up 90%. After World War II most German émigrés left for new countries or died out due to cancer; however some continued living in town until their deaths while others moved away altogether during that period. Streator, Illinois was founded by John A. Streator in 1847. The village became a town in 1874 and a city in 1908. In 1867, the Illinois Central Railroad built a line through the village to Carbondale, Illinois. That year, Streator became the first city in Northwestern Illinois to adopt a Municipal Charter. In 1907, the city merged with the neighboring town of Carbondale to form what is now known as Chicago-Streator metropolitan area. The population of the metropolitan area was over 500,000 people in 2010. The early history of Streator can be traced back to 1847 when John A. Streator moved from his home near Decatur, Indiana to begin his new life in what is now known as rural Cook County on the banks of the Mississippi River. At that time, it was one of only three villages west of Chicago that had not been annexed by that city during its formative years – along with Homer Glen and Lockport (now Buffalo Grove). According to one source: “John A.'s venture into this virgin country must have been an adventure - he had no idea how things would turn out” (Fowler). It should be noted that at this time there were still large forested areas east of Chicago and north of Decatur which held great potential for agricultural development; however, due largely to challenges such as lack of transportation infrastructure and location within easy commuting distance for eastern professionals and others drawn thereto – these opportunities did not materialize until much later in Streator's history (Morrow). As early as 1853, evidence suggests that John A.'s grandson James A., who lived near Carbondale at that time also engaged heavily in lumbering operations on behalf of his father-in-law Daniel Boone – responsible for pioneer work such as construction on Washington Street between Union and Dearborn Streets which is today called Main Street (Fowler 2). Not long after James' death circa 1865 though,- another descendant John Augustus Gentry began operations on land just east of present day Butler Road/Highway 141 approximately two miles south east from where James had located his operation more than fifty years earlier (Norman 519; cf Fowler 1/2/3 22; see also Map 3). ThisGeorge Gentry & Son Lumber Company operated continuously until 1935 when it closed shop because competition from other lumber companies made it difficult to maintain prices above costs resulting in significant losses throughout their tenure ($1 million according to company records) (Norman 519b; see also Map 3) . George Gentry's son Julius ultimately took control effective 1935 but continued operations until sales were discontinued due mainly to World War II stock shortages caused by rationing policies instituted during those years (- See further discussion below .) With respect both these families - much has changed since then including aspects pertaining directly or indirectly thereto within today's boundaries Of The City Of Chicago And Its Park District! During its relatively short existence - particularly given its remote location -John Augustus Gentry’s business developed some important connections which would prove beneficial both geographically and socially over ensuing decades: 1) He metamorphosed what are now Butler Road/Highway 141 into an important artery connecting Racine County with Cook County SOUTHWESTERNLY while living at 6353 NGT Rd ex Orange Ct.; 2) He helped connect Racine County with Lake Michigan via Highway 10 which he constructed thereby increasing trade between Northwestern Illinois communities northwest thereof & Southern Wisconsin (& Eastern Iowa); 3) His enterprise spawned several generations subsequent entrepreneurs who continued building upon many foundation blocks laid down by him (& others), culminating current day suburban growth within close proximity OF HIS HOMEredevelopment Zone #1 bordering ON WATERFRONT RESORT zone #2 adjoining LakeshoreTownship & Village neighbors redevelopment zone #3 lying NEAREST SIDE OF WOODHEAD creek
