One such shop was The Coffee House which became known as The Chemical Shop because it sold chemical supplies to soldiers stationed in Italy. In 1945, The Chemical Shop closed its doors after more than 40 years in business due to economic hardship; however, it reopened under new ownership a few months later and remains open today (2017).

Romeoville developed quickly into a small but thriving community with many residents engaged in agriculture, ranching and other business pursuits. For several years it served as the county seat for Sangamon County and attracted large numbers of settlers who were drawn to its fertile land and easy access to markets. In 1911, however, when Sangamon County was absorbed into the larger Chicago metropolitan area, Romeoville declined an offer to become its new municipal center. Although it continued to exist as a rural community until 2000, its history is largely unknown outside of its current surroundings.

However, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), Romeoville came under Union control and few residents remained in the town after the war ended. Aftermath of the war led to a decline in business activity in Romeoville as well as smaller decreases in population throughout most of 1865-1870.
