The shop served iced coffee, pastries, and other snacks. In 1852, a man named John Atwater opened a grocery store on Saginaw Boulevard. He started serving coffee as well as other food items. In 1863, a man named George Aiken opened his own grocery store on Michigan Avenue in Pontiac. He also started serving coffee and other food items. In 1885, an entrepreneur by the name of James McNaught opened a bakery on State Street in Pontiac. He started serving breakfast and lunch services as well as coffee for customers looking for an afternoon snack or drink after work. In 1927, a man named Harry Jaffeopened his own restaurant called Central Cafe which served both coffee and refreshments such as sandwiches and ice cream cones during business hours. In 1934, another entrepreneur by the name of Alvey Witherspoon established his own convenience store next to Central Cafe which became known as Witherspoon's Pizza Place . During World War II, Witherspoon's Pizza Place served up Italian-style pizza from their ovens while Central Cafe continued to serve regular café services such as tea and coffees . In 1948, Charles Schultz founded Starbucks with two friends who were working at McNaught's bakery . The town began as a post office called Pontiac on November 15, 1848. The original name was chosen by General James K. Polk to honor his father-in-law, John P. Morton (1765-1838), who had been governor of Michigan from 1829 to 1830 and again from 1835 to 1840 and who had served on the Ulysses S. Grant administration as secretary of war under President James Buchanan. Pontiac became an incorporated village in 1868, when it joined Kane County and the rest of Cook County into one countywide government under the jurisdiction of the Illinois General Assembly. The village charter granted residents "the right to vote by ballot for officers and members of their Village Council." In 1916, Pontiac voters approved a proposition to rename themselves "Norman Rockwell City" after Norman Rockwell (1908-1994). Incorporation followed in 1917 with a new city charter granting residents "the right to own property within its limits...to build houses...and erect businesses." In 1940, annexed by Chicago proper following World War II enrollment growth there had reached 2,000 people; however during the Korean War years that number swelled tenfold due to fallout from nearby Lake Michigan beaches which were bombarded with nuclear weapons testing by North Korea

Pontiac is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. It is located on the eastern edge of the Chicago metropolitan area and is part of the Rockford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 5,868 at the 2010 census. Pontiac was founded in 1871 by George W. Bruce and his brother-in-law John Crouch as a small village on the east bank of the White River. The village grew to become one of southern Illinois' most important agricultural towns, taking its name from General Anthony Wayne's cavalry unit which fought in the American Civil War at nearby Vandalia. In 1924, Pontiac became an independent city when it annexed parts of neighboring Aurora. The Quinn-Ivey Act granted city status to Pontiac by then-Governor Alton Quinn on November 3, 1924; and the city's first mayor was J.B. Sweeney (1925–27). Pontiac experienced significant growth during World War II as one of Illinois' steel manufacturing centers; its shipbuilding industry produced more than 100 ships for service in both World Wars I and II. However, during postwar years Pontiac experienced steady decline as auto production migrated northward to new factories in suburban Cook County instead of staying within town limits; by 2000, only about 20% of total employment remained within town limits despite continued population growth due to annexation into other municipalities since then. As postindustrial America began to change with rising technology and globalization following 9/11 attacks,[1] Pontiac has seen renewed development with efforts launched by Mayor Jim Durkin including developing a downtown district[2] and increasing economic opportunity through attracting businesses such as Amazon.[3][4] As global trade expands along Interstate 90 bisecting central Michigan,[5] there has been speculation that downtown could become an anchor district for larger retail developments adjacent to I-90K between Cass Corridor Road (north) and State Street (south). Today, Pontiac celebrates its 150th anniversary year as an active community while preparing for future growth over what may seem like impending stagnation; however some challenges still remain such as lack of infrastructure or business support needed for greater redevelopment efforts outside town boundaries while public transportation remains limited or nonexistent making it difficult to get around without automobile access or using public transportation alternatives like Uber or Lyft
