Pontiac is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Pontiac was founded in 1834 by Nicholas Griggs as a trading post on the outlet of the Chicago River between what are now Jackson Heights and Park Ridge. At first it was called "Grigs' Landing", after Nicholas Griggs, the founder and first settler. In 1841, when Pontiac became an incorporated town, its name was changed to honor General John P. Morgan who had fought in the Mexican-American War and then served as Governor of Illinois before moving to California where he built his great fortune. In 1892, two years after Prohibition had ended in America, Pontiac erected its own municipal government with a mayor and six council members instead of the one appointed by the governor or local officials governed by patronage politics which had characterized American governing since independence from Great Britain. This move towards self-government helped create an atmosphere of civic pride that has continued to be fostered here today. A number of community buildings still stand including Ford's Plant #1 (now known as simply "The Ford Factory"), which produced cars for America's auto industry; State Street Methodist Church (now known as Christ Episcopal Cathedral), which served as both a religious and social center for Pontiac during its early years; and High School No. 1 (now known as Midtown Catholic High School). Pontiac also long maintained strong trade ties with China through commercial relationships dating back to at least 1876 when Chinese traders arrived in search of iron ore near present-day Highland Park. Over time these connections have turned into more formal business dealings with various companies such as Fuzhou Xinxing Iron & Steel Co., Ltd., one of China's earliest foreign investment firms; Zhuhai Xinxin Metallurgical Manufacturing Co.; Shanghai Xinxing Metals Mining Machinery Works etc.; all based out of Zhuhai until 1974 when they were transferred to Shanghai Provinciallyowned Shaanxi Metals Corporation whose headquarters remain located there to this day within Geely Automotive Group Limited subsidiaries Evergreen Ventures Inc., Qingdao Weifang Heavy Industry Holding Company Ltd., Wuhan Jianghai Steel Company etc.). Today Pontiac remains an active center for commerce with numerous small businesses dotting every nook and cranny along State Street from east to west while Main Street remains anchored around Old Mill Road providing access Interstate 94 just steps away on one side while downtown fills up with retail shops on the other side giving it an appearance bordering on pedestrian mall status complete with large plazas filled with restaurants, cafes, theaters and even home builders/builders supplies stores all vying for attention against each other making it easy enough for anyone visiting either side not only see everything but feel like they're living right there in front of their house!

Power as a town located on the east side of Chicago. The city became a county seat on December 17, 1871. On July 1, 1903, Pontiac merged with its adjacent village of Villa Park to form the new city of Pontiac. The City of Pontiac experienced rapid growth following World War II when industries such as automobiles and aircraft emerged within its boundaries for the first time since settlement began in area some three centuries earlier. In addition to housing factories and other businesses that would support civilian industrial growth throughout much of suburban Cook County during this period, many residents simply left their homes to take up employment in downtown Pontiac or nearby Villa Park during wartime years because those areas were allowed to remain open for military use while other areas were closed off for commercial use or storage purposes (a practice known as "the Ghetto"). Although typically considered an agricultural center due to its location along major transportation routes (I-294 running through town), cotton farming continued until well into the 20th century while other crops such as corn and beans were grown throughout much of north central Cook County; however, these operations had little impact on overall economic development within town until after World War II when automobile production dramatically increased demand for goods grown elsewhere and local farmers found themselves unable to meet this additional demand without leaving their land subsistence level below market value (an occurrence known as "price compression"). This situation led directly to downtown Pontiac's current state contemporary with both architecture from early 20th century examples which are often difficult or impossible to find unprotected today outside major metropolitan areas due to over-development/overuse; together with various restoration efforts which have helped bring back portions OPontiarca's once significant architectural landscape including several large civic buildings now used primarily for offices rather than residential uses Today's economy predominantly revolves around government services such as education, law enforcement/justice system services (most notably fire fighting services) and healthcare; but there are also numerous small businesses operating within every aspect of day-to-day life including construction materials dealerships etc., among others - further underscoring how diverse everyday life has become since pre-war times when jobs just didn't exist hereabouts except where they did related directly To servicing local needs not based in industry wide trends
