The Peoria, Illinois Army National Guard has a rich history dating back to 1868. The unit was officially organized on September 14th of that year when the first soldiers arrived in the city from Minnesota. The Peoria Militia was initially called the “1st Regiment of Infantry,” but was later renamed the 3rd Regiment of Infantry. On July 22nd, 1881, Colonel Robert J. Ryan became Commandant of the Militia and General Oliver O. Howard took command of the regiment on October 1st. The 3rd Regiment served as an infantry brigade in various campaigns throughout World War I before being re-organized as a rifle brigade in 1922 and again becoming a rifle division in 1951. In 1968, the regiment became part of Task Force Illinois during Operation Neptune’s Spear which resulted in Cambodian refugees fleeing into Iowa through Waterloo County. On October 1st, 1971, three months after its activation at Fort Douglas Parkway Reserve Base Camp near Peoria, my regiment deployed to Vietnam as elements attached to 2/5th Marines (Airmobile). Our unit patrolled waterways and mined roads while engaging enemy forces during what is now known as Battle for South Vietnam – one of our most highly decorated missions EVER! After service there we returned home with several medals and commendations! On November 16th, 1970 Camp Butler MP Company F3127 deployed to Cambodia as part of Americal Forces Division 521 under Lieutenant Colonel John Denton RVN Commander for II Corps Area Headquarters Heading up II Corps Tactical Support Element with Elements from III Marine Brigade Combat Team 4659 At Phnom Penh Airport For clearing areas along Mekong River To provide political stability
