Pekin, Illinois is a city in and the county seat of Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,665 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Pekin is one of three cities in Kane County that are not incorporated as municipalities; the other two are Carbondale and Naperville. The first settlement in what is now Pekin was made on December 2, 1809 by Captain John Salisbury and his men from New York City after their escape from Fort Dearborn. They named their new town "Hennepin" in honor of General Hennepin who had pursued them during the War for Independence. The first post office was established in 1811 under the name "Newburgh". In 1816 Pekin became a village when it adopted a resolution to become an incorporated town. Pekin's growth as amining community began with its location on the north side of Credit River near its junction with Kankakee Creek (now known as South Shore Drive). By 1840 mining operations were conducted out of five mines located alongCredit River: Westmoreland, Barkley, Centralia (later called Telluride), Crystal Lake and Elkton Mines. A mill built by David Carruth on White Rock Creek helped turn around this early industry; later mills built here included those at Carbondale (1875) and Naperville (1901). In 1847 Pekin's post office changed its name to "Kaneville" after General John Custer who had led American forces against Native Americans at Little Bighorn Battlefield some 20 miles south-east of Pekin during Company F’s 7th Infantry Regiment’s Campaign against Custer's Sioux Indians led by Major General Winfield Scott Hancock on July 8–9, 1847. In 1870 there were over 1,000 residents living in Kaneville while only 100 lived in Pekin proper; today Kaneville has about 350 residents while Pekin has over 1,600 citizens
