The Navy has been a large part of our community in Park Forest for over 60 years. The navy deployment gift history in Park Forest, Illinois is reflective of that tradition. The first military deployment to Park Forest was on December 9, 1941 when the USS Constitution sailed into port. That deployment was significant as it marked the beginning of World War II and also served as a Battalion Landing Team training exercise. In 1946, the navy deployed again to Park Forest when USS John F Kennedy arrived in town to undergo repairs after being sunk by Japanese torpedoes off the coast of Japan. This time around, Mayor Harry Strobel donated $5,000 to help finance the ship’s stay in town. In 1957, the navy deployments occurred when USS Buchanan left for Korea withthe 1st Marine Division and became known as “Theada”. It was during this time that Park Forest residents were able to see live footage of Dwight D Eisenhower’s inauguration from atop one of her boats! In 1992, another significant Naval Deployment took place when USS Abraham Lincoln departed from Naval Station Mayport for Operation Desert Storm which lasted five months. In 2003, we saw yet another noteworthy event when USS Enterprise sailed into dock at Naval Base Chicago after being outfitted with state-of-the-art Weapons Systems gallery and digital additionnels along its bow! On April 30th, 2006 we had an even more momentous occasion when HMS Hermes arrived in town after spending two years sailing across the Atlantic! This event marks not only a new era for naval presence in our community but also an important milestone for naval conservation – The donation of 350 lbs OF salvageable materials from HMS Hermes operations will be used towards that cause! Since then we have seen occasional deployments including Destroyer Squadron 10 (DS10) deploying aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt last year and Destroyer Squadron 21 (DS21) deploying aboard HMCS Niagara this past fall; however most recently there has been no active duty Navy presence here at all! That may change soon as Task Force 156 ships are currently shipping out to Bahrain!

Navy deployed gift history can be traced back to World War II, when the United States Navy began conducting military shipments of personal items and supplies to its allies. This practice continued during the Cold War, as the Navy became increasingly involved in conflict abroad. In 1955, the newly created Department of Defense authorized the purchase of items such as radios, television sets, and other electronics equipment from foreign governments. This policy was called " gifting ", and it quickly grew into a popular way for the Pentagon to show its gratitude to allies and partners. The first navy-deployed gift was a radio set purchased by the United Kingdom in 1957. The following year, another country - Chile - gifted a TV set to the United States Naval Forces Europe (USNFE). From then on, gifts from different countries began arriving regularly at American naval bases around the world. By 1971, there were more than 50 navy-deployed gifts awaiting recipients in various parts of the world. Today, gifting is an important part of USNFE's Operation Merry Christmas program. Navy Deployed Gift History
Park Forest is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,045 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Park Forest was first settled in 1837 and its name comes from a nearby grove of trees called "Forest" because it was once covered in oak and hickory trees. In 1848, the village received a charter from the Illinois General Assembly and became one of the twelve townships in Cook County. The town meetinghouses were built between 1850-1854 on Dearborn Street between Lake Shore Drive and Michigan Avenue. According to village history, "the original 'town meetinghouse'...was dedicated on October 3rd, 1850 by Honorable John Pemberton as an event which marked not only the start but also the continuance of our proceedings as a town." In 1872, Park Forest became one of seventeen villages inCook County when it was annexed into Cicero Township. On November 20th, 1907 Park Forest residents voted to change their name to "Lake Forest". The new name reflected their location on North Kedzie Boulevard which ran through downtown Cicero at that time. In 1965 Lake Forest merged with Hinsdale Township to form Chicagoland Community School District No 134 (CHSD). CHSD operated all public schools within Chicagoland until 1997 when they were consolidated into Northwestern Illinois Educational Association (NIEA) district No 108 based out of Glen Ellyn IL.. Prior to this merger most private schoolsoperated within CHSD including Our Lady’s Academy High School located across from Wrigley Field then known as “The Friendly Gardens” until 2002 when they closed after many allegations of cheating involving students from neighboring districts According to Village History Records filed with the Village Clerk's office dated August 15th, 2007 "the Village Board directed staff to begin developing plans for redevelopment or demolition of Lots A & B [of land] adjacent to Wrigley Field." This development would have involved demolishing portions of Wrigley Field itself while leaving enough remaining property open for use by future generations as well as creating new housing units onsite On September 17th 2007 Park Forest celebrated its centenary by hosting a special celebration banquet outdoors featuring speeches by Mayor Rahm Emanuel and other dignitaries followed by fireworks displays
The Park Forest community was organized in 1848, after a survey of the area recommended that a forest be created to protect the town from development. The first residents were white and African American settlers who developed the land around what is now Park Forest. The first school was built in 1851, and the first grocery store opened in 1865. In 1870, a sawmill was built on the south riverbank of present-day Park Forest, and by 1875, there were over 20 businesses operating in town. In 1900, Park Forest had a population of 350 people and six stores. During World War I, Park Forest served as an training ground for Illinois National Guard troops. After the war ended, many businesses closed down or merged into other companies. By 1950, only one business remained in town – the Post Office. In 1955, when Illinois became an Underground Railroad state, Park Forest became one of its few stops. For many years afterwards, black Americans would bring food to local homes during winter months while they awaited freedom across the Mississippi River.
