The Park Forest National Guard is one of the United States' oldest and most powerful military organizations. The guard has been present in Park Forest since 1881, when it was organized as a militia to protect the town during a time of war with Illinois. In 1907, the National Guard was given its own headquarters and began serving as an arm of the United States Department of Defense. Today, the Park Forest National Guard is one of the nation's largest military organizations and provides security for national parks andapproximately 100 other sites across America. By 1907, however, it had become clear that an organization like this would need more space so they moved into their current location - which is now part of Historic District 3 - within Town Hall buildings on South High Street. Today, the Park Forest National Guard consists of approximately 1,000 members sworn into service each month who serve across America in various roles including law enforcement; security; emergency response; public health; special services;and more. The Park Forest National Guard was founded on November 1, 1917. The first Commander of the Guards was Captain J.C.Hutchinson who served from 1917-1918. From 1918-1920, the Guards were commanded by Major John A. Klineberg and from 1920-1921 by Colonel Harry S. Truman. From 1921-1927, the Guards were commandeered by Lieutenant Colonel James Dickson and from 1927-1929 by Colonel Edward Rickenbacker Jr.. In 1938, the Guards were given their present name of the National Guard Bureau in honor of President Franklin D. Roosevelt who had been a Brigade Commander with them during World War I.
Park Forest is a small village located in Macomb County, Illinois. The population was 1,693 at the 2010 census. Park Forest is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Village of Park Forest was platted on November 12, 1847 by Dr. John Haggerty and others as a rookery for white pelicans in central Illinois. In 1850, the village became known as "Herrmann's Grove" after Jacob Herrmann who donated land to the village in memory of his father-in-law Wilhelm Herrmann, who had died two years earlier while serving as Mayor of Glendale Heights, Illinois. In 1874, the Village of Park Forest annexed the towns of Elmhurst and Lombardville - both located within its borders - following a referendum vote by residents on whether to do so or not. As early as 1876, park forest had an Agricultural Market which housed up to 100 farmers from all over Cook County selling their produce from their fields near Highway 111 and State Street. The market continued until 1912 when it was replaced by the present day Armour Avenue market which still operates today despite being destroyed in December 1999 in a fire that burned down most of downtown Park Forest.
On July 4th, 1876, the United States national guard was born when Congress authorized the creation of a militia to protect America’s borders. The first units were organized on September 16th and consisted of 300 men. On October 1st, 1876, President Rutherford B. Hayes ordered all militia companies to reporting for duty at Fort Sumter in South Carolina. The Guard saw its first action on November 12th when a group of Confederate soldiers attacked a U.S. military installation near Charleston. In December 1876, President Hayes activated the National Guard to help suppress Home Rule riots in New York City and Philadelphia. By February 1897, there were over 26 thousand guardsmen serving in service across the country. The Guard has seen many changes throughout its history including during World War II when it became known as “The American Red Cross” due to its support of critical wartime efforts such as airlifting troops and supplies; during the Nixon Administration with its increasing use for law enforcement functions; and most recently through deployments in Afghanistan and Iraq where it has played an important role not just as a patriotic duty but also as an essential part of America’s security apparatus

In 2000, the town reached its peak population size with over 3500 residents; however, this number declined in 2008 when the recession hit. Today, Park Forest ranks as one of Illinois' fastest growing communities and is home to a vibrant cultural scene that includes several theaters and music venues as well as a large number of businesses including banks and restaurants.
The Park Forest area was laid out in 1809 by a group of Illinois legislators as part of the General Assembly's efforts to establish a new state. The land was donated by Jesse Weems, who had purchased it from the Native American tribe known as the Potawatomi. The town of Park Forest was founded on the site in 1811, and soon grew into a small but thriving community. In 1821, President James K. Polk designated Park Forest as the site for an experimental cotton gin located within the boundaries of what is now Indianapolis. The gin produced some of the first cotton products in America and helped spur development around Park Forest. Over time, other industries have developed in Park Forest, including manufacturing and retail businesses. In recent years, there has been significant redevelopment activity taking place around both Town Center and School District Square; this has led toPark Forest becoming one of Indianapolis' most vibrant areas.
