The Marine detachment stationed at Oak Park was the first to deploy gift history in Illinois. The Marines donated a Christmas tree in 1949 and a plaque in 1951. In 1957, they contributed an urn with Memorial Day messages from Marines throughout the world. In 1978, they donated a flagpole and two American flags to the park. The original village of Oak Park was located on a bend in the Chicago River near what is now the Loop area of Chicago. From 1871 to 1875, it was part of Galena Township. On July 1, 1875, it became an incorporated town under the name of Oak Park and Hollandale. In 1907, it changed its name to Oak Park and Wellston after Mayor Augustus Ewing Wellston and First Lady Augusta Wickersham. On February 14, 1912, it became an independent city with a charter from the Illinois General Assembly. The first mayor was Averill Harriman; he served for two terms (1914–1920). The second mayor was George Pappas (1920–24). In 1933-34 Mayor John J. Oak Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 113,831 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Chicago after Chicago Heights. The city was founded in 1837 by John Quincy Adams and named for his family's oak tree near his home on Fox Road. The location of Oak Park has been pivotal in its history. In 1837, General James K. Polk sent General Winfield Scott as part of a military expedition to explore the Great Lakes region and reach Lake Michigan before Russian forces could do so. Scott's force encountered Native American resistance at what is now the intersection of State Street and Woodlawn Avenue, now known as Roosevelt Road. In exchange for sparing their lives, the Indians allowed Scott's men to build a fortification that became known as Fort Dearborn or "The Dearborn Position." In 1847, President George Washington appointed John Quincy Adams as Secretary of State under then Vice President Joseph Wirtham (the first African American to serve in this position).Adams visited America's Upper Midwest and selected Oak Park as one of his stops on his tour across the continent. He recommended that Congress create a new national capital in downtown Chicago instead of moving from Philadelphia to New York City due to concerns about railroad construction through central Illinois and because he believed that downtown Chicago would be more business-friendly than Albany or Buffalo; Chicagoland ultimately gained its independence from New York City when Congress regranted autonomy to local governments on July 3, 1857. After Adams' death in 1850, responsibility for running the federal government passed from outgoing Vice President Wirtham until March 4th following Ulysses S Grant's inauguration as president over Andrew Johnson's objections within Cabinet members who saw successively Amazing Abraham Lincoln (Ulysses S.), Franklin D.'s message (John A.) King (Abe), Calvin Coolidge (Coolidge) - all white men -and Harry S Truman who had been an assistant Treasury secretary during Grant's term but ran successfully for office against incumbent Samuel Hinton Horace Greeley with no serious opposition despite being only 33 years old when he won election on November 5th 1888 - serving two terms - becoming one of history’s youngest Ulysses S Grant Presidential appointees aside from LBJ who was 37 years old at that time .
