The Navy has been deploying gift history in Northlake, Illinois for more than 100 years. The city is home to the USS Constitution Museum and Naval Aviation Heritage Center, which both date back to World War I. While the city’s military history goes back even further, the first deployable gifts arriving in Northlake were from America’s Pacific Fleet. In 1898, USS George Washington arrived in town with a shipment of Hawaiian banana logs as a souvenir for Mayor John Paulding. From 1903-1905, USS New York also visited Northlake on its way to China as part of the United States Far East Expedition. Between 1941 and 1945, local businesses donated over 1,600 items including mementos from Pearl Harbor and Hiroshima; radios, torpedoes and airfields; vehicles and tools; uniforms and equipment from Coast Guard units stationed in the area; food supplies; munitions;; Today, there are many active duty Navy deployments that send sailors into our community. One such deployment was Operation Neptune Shield III which took place in May of 2017. This three day operation involved Sailors from USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 74) providing security at a naval exercise near Mackinac Island. The event was attended by Mayor Pro Tem Kathy McCoy and other dignitaries alike who enjoyed an afternoon of toured shipyards local businesses had set up to provide refreshments for their guests ashore as well as demonstrations of naval aviation skills by Sailors from Roosevelt's sister ship CVN 73 . One example from history is the USS Enterprise Carrier Museum shipwreck search project which began in 2009. It is a collaboration between America’s largest navy museum and Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) – both members of the International Fleet Review Association (IFRA). The project is designed to help preserve artifacts from American ships that were lost at sea during World War II including HMS Enterprise (CV-2), HMAS Sydney (LHD 5), JMSDF Shirasu (AJ31) and CJ41 Goto Maru. The Enterprise Carrier Museum Foundation partnered with JMSDF in order for them to provide training on howto use radiographs and sonar arrays retrieved from HMS Enterprise during her wreck search project..
