Small batch coffee has been around since the 1800s. Coffeehouses, cafes and restaurants have always had small batches of their own favorite beans roasted in-house, but it wasn't until the mid-19th century that a small coffee company was founded in North Chicago. The first coffee shop in North Chicago was The Gristmill, which opened on the corner of State and Washington Streets in 1855. The Gristmill is still open today and serves up delicious cup of Joe to everyone who visits. In 1865, John Henson started a small grocery store at 527 Wabash Avenue called The grocery store of John Henson & Brothers. This store was popular with locals because they could get everything they needed from this one location. In 1907, Harry Waters started his own roasting business at 111 N Michigan Ave called Waters Coffee Roasters. This business became very successful and soon began serving up large quantities of single-origin coffee for people to enjoy all year round. In 1967, Driscoll's Coffee came into existence when Jerry Driscoll purchased two open warehouses near the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus for use as their roasting facility. At first, Jerry only used these warehouses for storing his own beans but soon began marketing their beans to other businesses and individuals throughout the city limits of North Chicago proper as well as parts of South SideChicago (then known as Blackstone City). In 1978, JerryDriscoll sold his ownership interest in Driscoll's Coffee to Bob Evans Corporation who further marketed and distributed our beans throughout Illinois and beyond!

The first black settlers arrived in what is now North Chicago in 1871 when William Sims settled on land just east of present-day Elmwood Avenue. In 1907, Mayor James Tilden dedicated a small park near Lake Michigan at State and Washington Streets for African American residents to use as their own private space. This park became known as "The Domain" because it housed all of the activities that African Americans could only dream about – such as playing ball, swimming, fishing and spending time with family members. In 1949, The City of Chicago annexed part of Aurora Township which included most of present-day NorthChicago including much older black neighborhoods like Gresham Park and Chinese Village. At this point more than half a century had passed since any African Americans had lived anywhere within city limits other than poor white neighborhoods like West Englewood or Lawndale
