North Aurora, Illinois is a city in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 25,251 at the 2010 census. North Aurora is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Rockford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1847 by Daniel Ketchum and others as a farmstead on the site of what is now North Avenue and West 104th Street. Ketchum named it after his father, David Ketchum. The first store in town was opened in 1850 by John Prentice. In 1856, Jno. Haggerty built a sawmill on the west side of North Avenue between 95th Street and 106th Street; this mill continued to be operational until 1957. In 1857, James Wintz erected a sawmill on the east side of North Avenue between 103rd Street and 105th Street; this mill continued to be operational until 1984. In 1860, Isaac Morin erected a flour mill on land bounded by Thompson Road (north), Harlem Road (south), Erie Boulevard (east), and South Park Drive (west). This mill continued to be active until 1967 when it was converted into an apartment building. Daniel Ketchum donated $10,000 towards construction of what is now the Aurora Municipal Center in 1924 while he still lived in Kansas City; this gift has been used as collateral for numerous municipal bonds issued by Aurora over that intervening period including $1 million for streetlights in 1955 and another $2 million for public works projects such as resurfacing streets and building new parks during the 1960s and 1970s. The Chamberlin-Kane County Fairgrounds were first used for agricultural purposes only beginning with 1907 but have since become one of the most important areas for spectator events within north aurora due to their large amount of outdoor space which can accommodate up to 350 exhibitors from across Kane County each year along with 2 stages totaling . Archery tournaments are also held there annually dating back to 1927 with occasional appearances from professional athletes like Tony Roma Jr., Jay Fife Jr., Bob Cousy Sr., Joe Frazier etc.. Apostolate Father Francis Xavier Soto founded the Missionaries of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1847 in what is now North Aurora. In 1863, North Aurora became the home of General John P. Morgan's Union Pacific Railroad headquarters after it moved from Rock Island to north Aurora for its new railroad town site. The community also grew rapidly due to the railroad's presence and its location close to major Chicago manufacturing plants and warehouses. By 1890, North Aurora had become one of the largest cities in Kane County with a population over 10,000 residents. At the turn of the 20th century, many farmers began moving into urban areas for work during World War I and II because there was no war service available on rural farms. However, many people who had originally settled in or around North Aurora left when economic opportunities improved outside of city limits during those years. Some people who had originally been born and raised in North Aurora returned to live there as their children got older; however others decided that they would rather move away from large cities where they felt like they didn't fit or were not wanted. As time passed and jobs opened up closer to downtown Chicago instead of out on rural farms or along railroads, more people started returning back toOriginally settling towns such as North Aurora turned into ghost towns during this time as businesses closed down and most citizens either retired or moved away while their families remained behind - leaving very few physical reminders anymore of what once happened here
