North Aurora, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 24,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. North Aurora is located on the north side of Chicago and borders the communities of Arlington Heights to the east, Plainfield Township to the west, Mount Prospect to the northwest and Winnetka to the southeast. The site for what would become North Aurora was first inhabited by Mennonites in 1847. They named their settlement after John Neely Bryan, an American senator from Massachusetts who had been instrumental in helping wavering Lake Michigan settlers purchase land in this area. The small community grew rapidly after railroad construction began nearby in 1871; by 1907 there were over 100 residents living in North Aurora alone. The city's growth accelerated even more following World War II when large amounts of heavy industry moved into Cook County from other parts of Illinois and Wisconsin. By 1970s North Aurora had reached its current size with a population of 30,000 people and was one of Chicago's most diverse neighborhoods. Today North Aurora remains a vibrant community full of culture and opportunity - home to businesses such as Macy’s Department Store (now Sears), Asahi Beer Company, Chiquita Brands International Headquarters (formerly Jamba Juice), KFC and numerous smaller businesses – both local and national – as well as top-notch schools like Northwestern University’s McCormick School Of Engineering & Technology and DePaul University’s Bauer College Of Business Administration. Koozies were also popular among sailors during winter when they couldn't carry any food or water with them on board ship. North Aurora was a small town in Illinois until the early 1830s. It was located on the north side of the Chicago River, about twenty miles west of the city proper. The town developed around a mill on the river, and its citizens were largely textile manufacturers. The first documented mention of North Aurora is from 1814, when it was known as Hennepin Township. In 1825, North Aurora became part of Chicago and changed its name to Aurora. By 1850,aurora had a population of about one hundred people and was an important center for cotton production. During the American Civil War, Aurora sided with the Union and propped up Confederate forces in their war effort. After the war ended, most residents left for various reasons; some returned toaura while others moved away entirely. Only a few remain today (mostly retirees). Aurora has experienced several major changes over time; however, its core values have not changed much. Today, many residents are still involved in their community through volunteerism or work related associations such as Rotary Club or Kiwanis Club memberships.
