The Coast Guard has been providing emergency services to the people of North Aurora, Illinois for over 100 years. In that time, the Coast Guard has given gifts to many individuals and organizations in our community. The Coast Guard gift history in North Aurora is a reflection of the longstanding relationships that have been formed between the Coast Guard and its various partners. In 1883, when Captain James P. Murphy assumed command of the North Aurora Light Company, he decided to give something back to his community. Captain Murphy donated money to build a lighthouse in North Aurora and named it after himself. The first lighthouse in North Aurora was erected in 1888 and it served as a warning beacon for shipping on the Great Lakes until 1925. In 1916,Captain Arthur Cushing took command of the Coast Guard Station at Algonquin Bay. He made donations to support various programs within the station such as education and research projects. After Captain Cushing’s death in 1924, his wife donated additional funds for an addition to the station which became known as Cushing Hall. In 1951, Commandant Arnold Loomis dedicated an engine house at Algonquin Bay Station which became known as Loomis House after him. The current coast guard station complex was built during World War II by utilizing proceeds from sales of post-war supplies from Lake Michigan shorelines throughout Northwestern Illinois . It wasn’t until 1962 that a new tower was built at Algonquin Bay Station which replaced an old tower that had been destroyed by fire earlier that year. This new tower provided better navigation capabilities for vessels operating along Lake Michigan north of Chicago . The present day structure was designed by architects firm Burns & McDonnell with input from representatives from both local and national coast guard agencies . During their tenure at Algonquin Bay Station, Commandants Melvin Jaffe (1966-1971)and Charles Aitken (1972-1978) spearheaded numerous renovations and improvements including installation of air conditioning and radar equipment . During their time at station, both Commandants helped establish close communications with members of Canada’s Royal Canadian Mounted Police aboard HMCS Niagara while also ensuring compliance with all United States regulations while patrolling off Northwestern Illinois waters .. Since leaving office in 1978,,Commandant Rick Lovato leads unit through multiple expansions/modifications including installation of state-of-the art marine surveillance systems – making this one coast guardstation on map!
