Morton, Illinois is a small town in the far north central region of Illinois. It was founded by European settlers in 1834 and became a railroad town. Morton's rich coffee history began with the arrival of George Morton, an entrepreneur who developed a coffee plantation in what is now Porter County. In 1845, Morton purchased land near present-day Carbondale and started to produce quality coffee. The first cup of Chicago Coffee was brewed at the old home of George Morton on Elm Street in 1865. The city of Chicago honored him with a park named for him in 1915. In 1916, Mr. Morton donated land to the city for use as a public library and gift shop complex called the George Merton Library and Gift Shop Complex. The townsquare which stands today on State Road 12 south-west of downtown Morton features some imposing structures from its early days: The brick courthouse (1887), built by Judge John Sennett; the blacksmith shops (c1900), operated by Joice Hodge; and the Masonic Lodge Hall (1929). In addition to these older buildings, two new ones were erected during World War II: The Army Air Forces Base Hospital (1942) and Park Elementary School Annex (1945). A third structure arrived post-war: The Community Club house (1949), designed by architects Harry Weese and Edward Dreyfuss for local civic organizations such as Rotary International meetings and dances. Morton is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,902 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Morton's history started with two settlers, Isaac and Anna Morton, who arrived on the same wagon train in 1847. Anna Morton had given birth to her first child three weeks before they reached their destination and she could not continue the journey because she was too pregnant. The two families met again when they passed through Illinois on their way back east in 1849. Isaac Morton hired out as a farm laborer for his brother-in-law Daniel Webster and he took Anna Morton with him to live on his farm until she gave birth to their first child in 1850. They then returned to Morton where Anna continued working on theWebster farm until 1855 when Daniel Webster died suddenly leaving Anna a widow with four children to support alone. She eventually married John Davenport and moved back into her old home where she lived until her death in 1925. In 1955, after more than fifty years of service as an important part of the community, Mrs. Davenport’s house was destroyed by fire which left many of its windows entirely uninjured but also caused extensive damage to other parts of the building including most of its interior walls plastering had been peeled away exposing brick masonry beneath which lay hidden framework supports and (at one point) even OSHA safety Investigation records dating back over fifty years were lost within thatsupporting framework! In response to this terrible loss Mrs Davenport’s grandson John Davenport donated $2,500 towards replacing all those damaged windows plus additional work needed such as re-paintings and repairs etcetera so that now once again not only can you see inside Mrs Davenports old house but it also looks beautiful!
