Although no longer an active duty force within our own country, Mornitonians continue their proud tradition of providing support to our defense system through volunteer organizations such as Armor Riders Regiment #2 or Combat Infantry Battalion #1 (CIB#1).

Morton, Illinois is a small town located in the Sangamon County seat of Westville. The population was 3,698 at the 2010 census. Morton's early history can be traced back to 1837 when a group of farmers and surveyors named themselves the "Morton Party" and founded a new settlement on what is now Morton Lane. They quickly realized that they needed more than just a stop on their way to other settlements, so they began developing the area around their new community. By 1860, Morton had become an important rail junction for goods between Chicago and Rockford. This led to its nickname of "The Railroad Capital of the World." In 1871, Mayor James Hickey organized a citizens' commissioners election to choose a new school board. The initial vote resulted in two candidates - Jno. Wm Goudreau (a lawyer) and Augustus Pugh (a farmer). Goudreau won with 66% of the vote while Pugh received 34%. Afterward, Hickey appointed Goudreau as first school superintendent. Goudreau served until 1889 when he became mayor again and lost in an election against Harry Aiken Sr.. During World War I, Morton was one of several small towns along the railroad line that supplied munitions to Great Britain. When it came time for soldiers in training at Camp Butler to leave for Europe in 1915, many residents decided not to go because they did not want their village associated with military activity. However, most turned out in force when news arrived that General John Pershing was planning his invasion of Mexico City and would need supplies from all over Illinois! As result, many people who had wanted nothing to do with war got involved Provisional Army units fighting alongside General Pershing as part of his Mexican campaign – including some who would later live in Morton during World War II! In 1926-27,[1] local banker Milton Schieffer undertook an extensive renovation project at Northwestern University's McCormick School Of Business Administration which included enlarging both classrooms and building football stadium annexes on site. More recently[2], $10 million has been spent by Northwest Community Development Corporation (NCDC), Inc., through township investment fundsourcing improvements such as sidewalks/ streetscape/ lighting/ development rights adjacent thereto; beautification projects; land acquisition/reclamation projects; repaving streetscapes; installation or replacement of streetlights throughout township (2008-2012); planting trees within limits
