The Marine Corps has been deployed in support of United States forces since the end of World War II. The Marines have played an important role in numerous conflicts and campaigns, making them a well-known name in the military. In Montgomery, Illinois, the Marines have a long and proud history dating back to World War II. The city was named for General James K. Polk, who served as President of the United States from 1845 to 1849. In honor of General Polk, the City of Montgomery erected a plaque that reads: “General James K Polk Boulevard – honoring our fallen ally during World War II’s conflict in America”. Since its inception, Montgomery has been home to some very eminent Marines. Among these are Major General Lewis J. Burney (1930-1989), who was Commandant of Marine Barracks at Quantico during World War II; Admiral Chester Nimitz (1937-2008); and Lieutenant Governor Richard Buell (1941-2010). These men were part of Operation Neptune’s Spear—the largest amphibious invasion in history—and played significant roles in many battles including Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Today, there are more than 5,000 Marines stationed here in Montgomery County! This number is only growing as new deployments are announced each year! The County is also home to two Marine barracks—Marine Barracks at Westmont and Monterey Park— which house 2nd Battalion/5th Marines and 1st Battalion/7th Marines respectively. Montgomery is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. Montgomery is located on the west side of Cook County and straddles the border of DuPage and Kane Counties. It is bordered by Aurora to the north, Grand Crossing to the east, Park Ridge to the south, and Westmont to the west. The community was founded in 1855 as a result of a land grant from James K. Polk. It became an incorporated village in 1868. The post office at Montgomery was first established in 1879. At its peak in 1920 it had a population of 2,816 people. In 2000 it had a population of 1,811 people. The community has been through several cycles of growth and decline over its history; however, it has always been an important economic center for southern Cook County due to its location within easy reach of major shopping areas such as Chicago and Oak Lawn/River Forest on the north side of Chicago and River Forest on the south side of Oak Lawn/River Forest respectively. The cotton plantations that once thrived here have long since gone away and are now mainly used for agricultural purposes; however, there are still some remnants remaining which give Montgomery a unique flavor that few other communities can boast. One aspect that makes Montgomery stand out from other similar towns is its lack of malls or shopping centers - instead residents rely heavily on small businesses such as restaurants and department stores which often operate locally-owned businesses throughout most days if not all hours (although larger retail outlets do exist). This policy has helped keep Montgomery relatively independent from downtown Chicago while also providing much needed local employment opportunities outside Of Town during offpeak hours when most smaller businesses close down or go dormant because they cannot compete with big box retailers who offer generous discounts and free parking lot entrances during prime store hours). Montgomery is a small town in Montgomery County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,746 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village of Montrose was annexed to Montgomery in 1868 and became a separate community within the town. Montgomery was laid out in 1836 by John J. Montgomery, who named it for General George Washington's army officer and mentor, James Montgomery. The first permanent settler arrived in 1840 and soon after founded the local school system which still operates today. In 1851,!'"The Village of Montrose" was annexed to Montgomery but remains an unincorporated community within its boundaries today." In 1865, when Abraham Lincoln made his famous “ Four score and seven years ago” speech from Ford's Theater in Philadelphia, he paused near Kendallville on his way back from Vandalia to Springfield (now Joliet) with campaign stops planned throughout Illinois. After giving a short address at nearby Mount Carmel Methodist Episcopal Church before continuing on his journey home, Lincoln turned right on US 40W towards Fulton (now Ottawa) where he would spend the night before continuing his trip eastward that evening accompanied by some top aides- Compare this with modern day campaigns where speeches are given several times during one day or even overnight visits! Lincoln made two more stops en route to Warsaw Township before finally reaching Springfield late that night- a distance of over 261 miles! As if those long days were not enough effort already required just traveling across state lines (!), being waited on hand and foot while aboard presidential carriages must have been close to intolerable! Lincoln celebrated his inauguration as President of America on April 12th 1865 at McCormick Place – exactly 136 years later! It has been said that “the growth and progress of our city cannot be overemphasized because it is largely due to the munificence and enterprise of Mr John J Montgomery” who donated land for what is now downtown Montgomery; along with other donations such as building lots for businesses located near Wabash Avenue/US 40W between First Street & Hinsdale Road., providing much needed commercial space early on in downtowns history despite its location outside present day Montgomery town limits! Downtown Montgomery experienced rapid growth following its annexation into town beginning in 1870 thanks primarily to slave labor being used during construction projects funded by John J.Montgomery through contributions such as $100 per family membership dues collected from freed slaves working alongside their white owners constructing various items associated with everyday life including homespun cotton clothiers stores etcetera - something we take for granted these days without having any appreciation for how difficult it must have been back then !
