Montgomery is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 707 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Montgomery is located on the east side of Cook County and borders the towns of Glenview to the north, Hinsdale to the west, Tinley Park to the south, and Westmont to the east. The first Europeans to settle in what is now Montgomery were French trappers who came through that area in 1672. A post office was established at Montgomery in 1836, and by 1840 it had become a village. The name probably comes from "morgant" or "montgomery" which means mountain peak or high hill in French. In 1871, three railroad companies bought land near present-day Montgomery and began building tracks connecting Chicago with points north and west. By 1887, when construction stopped because of lack of money, Montgomery had a full-time postmaster and six stores - all but one open during wartime when materials were rationed. In 1907 two new stores were built on cornerstones donated by local farmers; one became an ammunition store and one became a drugstore/pharmacy next door to each other (the current drugstore/pharmacy was built in 1978). From its early days as a small community dotted with residences for farm workers (many coming from Ireland), Montgomery has been known for its apple orchards - still among Illinois' most productive - as well as its many annual traditions such as Christmas Parade (now an annual event) and Area Agricultural Fair (a weeklong agricultural exposition).

Montgomery is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,838 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Montgomery was founded in 1836 as a small community on the border of Cook and DuPage Counties by two brothers named George Washington and Solomon Montgomery. The original town site was along what is now Route 56, just south of present-day Montgomery Street. In 1854, when Illinois became a state, Montgomery became one of its first towns and remained so until it lost its municipal status in 1968. Prior to that time, it functioned as a village under the jurisdiction of nearby South Elgin. TheGeorge Washington Bridge crosses over the Fox River between Montgomeryshire and blueberry country west of downtown Montgomery on what once was I-PASS Road which stands today as Wrightwood Drive). A new bridge replaced the old bridge in 1987 and carries US Highway 41 across the Fox River east of downtown Montgomery to continue downriver to Bloomington (via Kildare Boulevard) while also providing access to University Park across Prairie Avenue from downtown Montgomery. According to legend, early settlers learned how to grow corn from watching an Indian chief do so on his farmstead near where present-day University Park sits; accordingly they built their first gristmill there in 1840. The town's first school was established in 1841 by Wm Henson with funds provided by John Pemberton (the founder of PemberTONE FABRICATIONS CO.). The present building housing First Baptist Church –now known as “The Star”–was completed in 1903 after years of construction spurred by demand for permanent meeting space within walking distance of most residents’ homes. In addition to its worship services there were public meetings held annually throughout much of this period covering topics including taxation matters; land transactions; schools etc.. In 1872 Enterprise Manufacturing Company began producing cigars for American Cigar Co., then America’s leading cigar firm (it remains America’s largest cigar company still operating today). After five years it merged with Brown & Williamson Tobacco Company… becoming Brown & Williamson Enterprise Corporation which continued operations until 1992 when it merged with Philip Morris USA Incorporated creating Brown& Williamson Philip Morris plc…. Montgomery County, Illinois was organized on December 12, 1831 and named for General James Montgomery of the United States Army. The county seat was Danville. It included all of present-day Montgomery County as well as part of what is now Addison County. On January 1, 1835, the entire county was made a part of the newly created Cook County.
