Midlothian is a small town in Illinois, United States. The population was 6,584 at the 2010 census. Midlothian is the county seat of McLean County. Mid-Lothian was founded in 1838 by Scotsmen who had come to America to work on the Great Western Railroad. The first post office opened in 1839 and the first store was built in 1840. The town grew rapidly and by 1860 it had a total population of 37 people. In 1867 Midlothian became one of thirteen townships in McLean County and remained so until it was dissolved into municipal government in 1971. The history of Midlothian begins with Scotsmen who arrived here during the years leading up to the Civil War seeking refuge from violence back home. One such man, John "Jimmie" Hogg, began construction on what would become known as the "Great Northern Railway." He organized his workers into gangs and managed to complete construction before President Abraham Lincoln called out federal troops to suppressthe riots that had broken out earlier that year following passage of the Kansas–Nebraska Act (1854). Assembling his men near Kedzie Junction, Hogg committed suicide rather than be captured and brought back to justice for his role in these events. After Union forces burned down Kedzie Junction, local residents banded together to rebuild their village using whatever materials they could find lying around when their homes were destroyed or taken over by Confederate forces during the war effort. This period saw some of Midlothian's most significant improvements including establishment of a school system which served children from grades 1 through 8; laying new streets; building churches and other civic buildings; and creating an agricultural economy based on raising hogs, rabbits, chickens, crops, etc., all while struggling against difficult environmental conditions influenced both by natural phenomena such as floods caused by heavy rains (which were common during this time) as well as human factors such as lack of available land or access to proper transportation facilities limiting production opportunities within certain areas outside of town limits.
