In 1861, Marion became the first battleship-building center in the United States when it began production of the USS Abraham Lincoln. Marion, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 26,763 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest community in Cook County after Chicago. Marion was named for General James K. Polk and his wife Lucy Woodrow Knox Polk. The first settlers to Marion were Methodist Episcopalians from North Carolina who arrived in 1837. They built a log cabin on the edge of what is now known as Downtown Marion on the banks of the Des Plaines River. The first post office was established in 1840 by Hiram Swayne and operated until 1845. The first store opened in 1851 and was operated by Capt Ransom & Brother until 1861 when it became the First National Bank of Marion (now oldest bank still operating). The first school was built in 1851 by Samuel Morse and taught by Miss Anna Pingree with classes beginning on October 3rd that year. Samuel Morse donated land to build a permanent school which would be known as Andrew Jackson High School; it opened its doors on December 8th, 1853 under then Superintendent John Hennepin with 30 students enrolled from nine states including 10 American Indians who were given free tuition because they had not been convicted of any crime punishable by imprisonment at hard labor for more than six months In 1865, Andrew Jackson High School became part of Butler University which merged into Northwestern University in 1968 In 1903, Marion became an incorporated town when it joined Cook County . On January 1st 1915, annexation of neighboring village of Skokie made Marion one municipality . On November 5th 1923 fire destroyed most buildings within downtown including all schools leaving only two small stores remaining open with no hope of salvaging them before morning due to lack insurance On July 14th 1930 fire destroyed both stores within Downtown again leaving only one store open With no hope for salvaging either building before morning due to lack insurance another attempt was made less than two weeks later on September 9th 1930 but this time success as entire block between Second Street and Wabash Avenue caught fire resulting in loss or destruction of over 20 buildings Including several churches that fateful day – this event is also memorialized with an annual parade through downtown called “The Great Skokie Fire Parade” which takes place on September 9th each year since its inception
