In the year 1892, when General Leonard Wood gave the first acceptance speech at the University of Illinois, he cited "the Military Intervention in South Africa" as one of his reasons for leading the state's military forces. Over time, military deployments have become a regular occurrence in Marion County. The United States Army has been stationed here since 1917, and there have been numerous deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. Today, Marion is home to both the US Air Force and Navy Base; as well as two Camp Pendleton Army posts. Marion County's history with military deployment goes back even further than that. On October 25th of 1861, Union soldiers landed on an undeveloped island in what is now Marion County during the American Civil War. The island was known as Fort Dearborn because it was commanded by General David Dixon Dearborn - who had also served in Iowa during the war. After being captured by Confederate forces, Fort Dearborn became a Confederate garrison until Union troops arrived and relieved it on November 2nd of 1861. The original fortifications on Fort Dearborn were destroyed by Union artillery fire in 1865; however, part of the fort still stands today and can be seen from Route 53 east of town. The post office on Old Fort Dearborn Road still serves as a museum open to the public today (closed Mondays).

Marion, Illinois is a town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest community in McLean County after Bloomington. The town was founded in 1871 by Pershing Hines and his wife, Sarah Jane Hines. It was named for General Marion who helped free the slaves in Illinois during the American Civil War. The Hines family had three children: Pershing (1872-1927), Sarah Jane (1875-1964) and their son Harry W. Hines (1879-1963). In 1881, John Smedley bought 640 acres of land east of Marion and founded Smedleyville. In 1892 he sold land to Edwin Ewing which became the nucleus of what is now Arlington Heights. In 1896, one thousand residents voted to change the name of Marion from "Hinesville" to "Arlington Heights." On December 12th 1898 President McKinley delivered an address at Arlington Heights High School dedicated to "the promotion of education through strong industrial relations between employers and employees." This event marked a turning point for Arlington Heights as it became one of America's most successful small towns with a high level of unemployment among its citizens and businesses alike. After years of growth, development and expansion that included annexations within Marion itself along with other communities near it such as Arlington Heights and Streamwood Park (now known as Wheaton), developer Harry Wexler purchased 2,000 acres bordering Springfield Township on the north side of Chicago in 1922 for $2 million dollars making him one of America's largest landowners thereabouts. With this purchase Byers secured control over much needed water resources necessary to support suburbanization while also providing an agricultural base that would provide jobs throughout Northwestern Illinois; all while still allowing access to downtown Chicago via expressways including I-88/I-294/I-94/US 50/Kankakee River Parkway

In 1851, the state of Illinois organized Marion County into a district under the jurisdiction of Chicago. Despite this growth, however, poverty persisted until well into the 21st century. In 1865, when General George McClellan arrived at Indianapolis with his army to fight against Confederate forces in the American Civil War, he took up residence at Fort Harrison on what is now Delaware Street in Marion County. After several months of training at nearby Camp Chase near present-day Union Station, McClellan's army moved eastward along I-465 towards Richmond Heights where they would ultimately clash with Robert E Lee's army on April 12th that year known as "The Battle of Gettysburg." For many local residents who lived within hearing distance of battle or witnessed it first hand; The Battle of Gettysburg remains an indelible memory that will always be part of their county’s history! Following The Battle of Gettysburg, General Sherman's march through Alabama resumed on July 4th 1870 which culminated with his crossing over Mobile Bay into Mississippi on July 9th following a three day journey from Chattanooga TN via New Orleans LAX airport! This event marks one significant milestone in United States History! In 1811, the first permanent settlement in what is now Marion, Illinois was made. The town was founded by a group of farmers who arrived from Kentucky, and named it after General Andrew Jackson. The town grew rapidly, and by 1825 there were over 100 people living in Marion. In 1829, the legislature authorized the erection of a county courthouse in Marion. This was the first county seat in Illinois. By 1840, the population of Marion had reached 2,500 people. In 1861, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), MarionSupport Light Infantry Regiment was organized and served in the Union Army. On November 3rd 1861, this regiment participated in a battle at White Sands Field near Jacksonville Landing on Long Island Sound. Afterward, they marched to Cairo where they received their colors from General James Halleck and returned to camp at Orleans Landing on Staten Island on December 10th 1861 The regiment eventually disbanded on April 15th 1865 due to lack of volunteers
