The city of Marion, Illinois is a small town located in west-central Illinois that has been mentioned in various American histories. The first mention of Marion was made by the French in 1812 when they named it after Jean-Baptiste Marquette, who had explored the area. In 1821, the United States purchased land from France and began to build a fortification called Fort Dearborn. The fortifications were completed in 1832 and served as a military post until 1865. In 1815, John C. Frémont, an American explorer and scout, visited the area and named the river Missouri after his father. In 1831, John Stephenson founded Stephenson's Logging Company in what is now Marion. The company built a sawmill on the current site of the city in1835 and began to log Timber Creek which flows through Marion today. In 1840, George Washington Carver founded Carver's Market Place at what is now Fifth Street and Main Avenue in Marion. From 1800 through 1860, most of what is now Marion was part of Noble County - which was also known as Kosciusko County during this time period. However, on October 12th of 1860, Union General Andrew Johnson defeated Confederate General Robert Ewing at Battle of Pea Ridge near present day Carbondale. This event marked the beginning of Reconstruction Era in America where all southern states were required to accept new government forms including racial integration (in Indiana), voting rights (in Kansas), education (in Alabama), women's suffrage (in Mississippi), labor laws (in Wisconsin) etcetera etcetera etcetera... After World War I ended with Victory over Germany on Nov 11th 1918 by Archibald McNaughton USMC general - much like how Weimar Germany had ended four years earlier - much left changed throughout America including race relations between whites/Anglo Americans vs African Americans/Native Americans... For many white people living outside rural areas such as those around Indianapolis or Chicago there was little opportunity for advancement or economic development unlike their counterparts who resided within these areas... however for African Americans life wasn't always easy either since they were not considered citizens or property owners... Marion’s history starts with Jean Baptiste Marquette who Explorer passed through this area on his way southward towards St Louis back in 1795 . He gave name to creek that flows thru town & later Ft Dearborn where U S Pres Purchased Land from France c1921 . Marron City formed from Partsof NobleCounty when Union Gt Andrews Defeated Confederacy Oct 12 1860
In 1818, the United States acquired Marion, Illinois from the Kingdom of France. The town was founded by a group of English-born settlers and named after General Anthony Wayne, who died in 1784 during the War of 1812. The community grew quickly and soon boasted a post office, schoolhouse, tavern, physician's office and two churches. In 1828, the first dry goods store was opened in Marion by George Biddle. By 1830, there were five stores in town and over 100 residents. In 1835, the town became known as "the most thriving community on the continent." Although it had only one church at that time, it soon developed into a large religious center with several thousand members. In 1850, the first railroad arrived in Marion and quickly made the town an important transportation hub. By 1870, Marion had reached its peak population size with 1,500 residents and 10 businesses. However, due to its location at the crossroads of many different trails and roads that served nearby settlements throughout much of Illinois., it began to decline rapidly in popularity during the1900s until it eventually ceased to exist as an incorporated municipality in 1970
