The Lyons National Guard Museum has a collection of national guard gifts from across the United States. These gifts range from medals and insignia to tools and equipment. The unit was called the First Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry. The regiment consisted of militia soldiers from Lyon County, Illinois. When the American Civil War started, most of these men joined Union army units. However, some Lyons men volunteered to serve in the National Army as members of Company G of the Third Battalion, Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment (now part of 1st Armor Division). In 1865, Company G disbanded because it had not been able to recruit enough soldiers for another regiment. But several Lyonians who had enlisted with Company G decided to re-enlist with the National Army instead because they felt that their state's neutrality should be preserved during the war. This decision made Lyons one of the few communities in America without an official militia unit when hostilities began on April 12, 1861. When America entered into war against Great Britain on April 6th, many volunteers from Lyons decided that they would rather fight for their country than stay at home and watch things happen "over there". Some men even traveled to Springfield and other Northern cities where they could join up with local militias and fight against British forces. The First Regiment of Illinois Volunteers Infantry served until 1864 when it was mustered out due to lack of recruits or money; however, a group of Lyons men reformed and re-formed as Company H in 1864 again due to new enlistments being available from friends or family members who had volunteered before company disbandment happened . In 1865 another company was raised called 2nd Battalion (Illinois) United States Artillery Volunteers which fought at Vicksburg under General Ulysses S Grant during that campaign but eventually disbanded after only six months service due mostly because there were no more artillerymen available for duty outside OFU despite calls for more troops by Congress . After this last company disbanded most likely around 1866 there wasn't any real need for a third battalion so all 3 companies combined went back into storage until 1959 when they were finally reactivated as part-time museum displays
