Lombard is a city in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 37,569 at the 2010 census. Lombard is the eighth most populous city in Kane County and the second most populous city in Illinois. It is bordered by Aurora to the east, Carbondale to the north, Normal to the northeast, and Skokie to the southwest. The area that would become Lombard was first settled by Europeans in 1815 when General Anthony Wayne founded a outpost on what is now Springfield Township. By 1825, many of these pioneers had moved into what would become Lombard Township with their families. pioneer James Edwards built two small log homes on land which he donated to the township in 1827. One of these homes still stands today as Lombard's first homecoming hall and schoolhouse complex known as Old Edwards House. Lombard's original center was located near present day North Avenue and West State Street where a small town called Beaver Dam grew up around this business district. In 1830, an act of Congress designated Springfield as the new capital of Illinois; however, due to disagreements over boundary lines between Cook County and Kane County, Beaverdam continued to exist until 1847 when it merged into Lombard proper. In 1854–55 a group of wealthy investors bought out all of the shares of Edwards' company for $6,000 cash ($ million dollars in 2017). This ignited an era known as "the era of enterprise". A number of businesses were established during this time including Ford Motor Company (1856), First National Bank (1859), Peoria Brewing Company (1860), Macklinore Iron Works (1862), Continental Mill & Foundry (1864), Winton-Fenimore Coal Mines (1865) and finally Chicago Electric Light Company (1868). These companies generated significant jobs within Lombard while also developing key industries such as automotive manufacturing and electrical transmission/distribution across much of Western Illinois during this period. In 1916–17 there were major changes within Lombard when Mayor Harry Soller formed a committee to study ways to improve public transportation within town limits which ultimately led to construction of three electric streetcar lines: Line 1 from North Avenue south through Maple Grove Cemetery westward; Line 2 from South Avenue east through Watervliet Park northwestward; and Line 3 running along present day Northwest School Road from Clintonville southward service then continuing northwest past White City before terminating at Central Station outside village Limits

Lombard was founded in 1815 by Nicholas Lombard and his wife, Maria. The Lombards were the first European settlers in what is today Illinois. They were from the town of Bologna, Italy. In 1819, they moved to what is now Lombard and started a farm named after them. From that farm, they developed a small town that still exists today. Nicholas Lombard died in 1848 and Maria continued to live there until her death in 1857. She is buried at the old Methodist graveyard in Lombard. The townspeople decided to name their new town after her late husband’s hometown of Bologna because no other Italian-based towns had been given this honor before then. The town of Lombard was incorporated on February 17, 1865. It became the capital of Illinois on November 3, 1923. At its incorporation, it had a population of about 10,000 people. During its early years, the town did not have any businesses or schools; it relied only on agriculture for its economy. However, as time went on and more businesses started up around Lombard Proper (the original part of the town), the community began to grow more rapidly and achieve some level of success both economically and politically. Lombard experienced some major growth during World War II when many industries came online thanks to advancements made by Mr., Harry Chandler at Sam’s Club which located nearby on North Main Street called “The Chandler Place” across from Sears Roebuck & Company store which was home to manyk people during that time period also known as “Downtown”
