The National Guard in Lockport, Illinois was founded on November 16th, 1847. The first Commander of the National Guard in Lockport was Colonel John T. Haggerty. The duties of the National Guard were to provide security for the town and its citizens, as well as providing military training for local residents. There were a total of 2,500 soldiers stationed in Lockport at the time of its foundation; however, this number increased to 5,000 by 1854. The first order from President James K. Polk called for all Volunteer Guards to be raises to 100 men each within four months; however, only 50 men were raised and these men served until 1860 when their numbers decreased again due to civil war issues. In 1871 there was an increase in volunteer guards with President Ulysses S. Grant ordering them into service for three years with no end in sight; however, this order was rescinded after Grant’s death which caused the military unit to dwindle even more. Veterans from this unit later formed Companies A-K of the First Regiment Armory Company which still remains active today and provides security for local businesses today.

Lockport is a city in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 27,828 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in McLean County and the third-largest city overall in Illinois. The name of the town was given to it by General James Wilkinson from Lockport Township, New York on November 7, 1792 during his visit to that area as part of his negotiations for the Treaty of Paris. The first permanent settler in Lockport was John Packard who arrived in 1793. He built a mill on the river near what is now Main Street. John Packard's son George also settled here and founded the first store and post office which opened in 1802. One of George Packard's sons, Jacob (1796-1876), started a tannery which produced leather goods until it closed around 1825. A schoolhouse (1806) and two churches (1810) were built here before being replaced with modern buildings between 1830 and 1840. In 1827, Peter Bosser bought land here from David Revell for $1,500 cash plus 20 acres ($100/acre). This became Lockport Township when it was organized into McLean County on March 1, 1837. In 1839 a sawmill was built on what is now Water Street by Augustus Prentice after he acquired land east of US 40 along Buffalo Creek from Gideon Welles (a former member of Congress from Massachusetts).
