The Coast Guard gift history in Lockport, Illinois begins with Captain John H. Thornton who served from 1892 to 1895. In 1896, he was promoted to Lieutenant and then Captain. He served as the Commandant of the Coast Guard station at Lockport until 1898 when he resigned due to ill health. In 1899, he was replaced by Commodore George W. Burt who also resigned due to ill health. Here is a list of other commanders of the Coast Guard Station in Lockport: In 1924, Commodore Harry Speed became Commandant and continued serving until his retirement in 1931. In 1937, Rear Admiral Arthur Aiken became Commandant and continue serving until his retirement in 1942. In 1951, Vice Admiral Clifford Crouse became Commandant and continued serving until his retirement in 1954. In 1957, Commodore Willis Denny assumed command and served until his retirement in 1959. In 1960 Commodore Edward Fenton took command and served until his retirement in 1962. Lockport is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 31,567 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first European to visit Lockport was Nicholas Pevsner on October 25, 1814 while he was Commandant of Joliet Township. He named it after John Lockhart of London who had charted an Arkansas River route through that region in 1807-08. The first post office was established in 1827 as "Newburg". The name may be derived from lockPORT - a small creek that flowed through the town and its immediate vicinity. A dam across the creek formed by federal government workers during World War I destroyed most of the original village and community center; only a few remnant buildings remain today. In 1840, Captain Cornelius Vanderbilt organized what would become known as the "Vanderbilt Cotton Mill", which became one of America's leading cotton mills. In 1850, Edwin Forrest built a millrace directly into what is now Lockport Creek for irrigation purposes; this mill remains one of the oldest still functioning in Illinois. At various points throughout its history, Lockport has been home to churches (First Presbyterian Church in 1840-1845; Methodist Episcopal Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1865-1966; First Baptist Church building opened in 1951 and demolished 2009), schools (lockPORT School District No 1A was organized on February 15, 1896), businesses (the lockPORT Manufacturing Company founded by James Mapes began production at its current location on Main Street in 1947), and two golf courses (the Donald J Woods course opened in 1949) – all within easy walking or biking distance of each other. Today Lockport features several museums including Shedd Aquarium and American Museum Of Natural History among others as well as several restaurants including KFC and Papa John's Pizza locations along with numerous parks such as State Park Lakefront park with miles of hiking trails also located within close proximity to downtown Lockport proper
The Coast Guard has been a part of American society since the early 1800s. The first coast guard station was established on Long Island in 1764 as part of the British military presence in America. In 1819, the Coast Guard transitioned from a militia to an agency of the United States government. The Protection of Americans by sea and land Act of 1892 created the Coast Guard Reserve, which provided for shore-based patrols and search and rescue operations during times of crisis. In 1924, Congress authorized the creation of a national coast guard system within the newly formed Department of Commerce and Labor. On July 1, 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9382 placing all U.S. waters under martial law while he investigated Nazi Germany’s activities in America. This order designated New York Harbor as “the Zone of Defense” and gave rise to today’s coast guard mission: To protect citizens from harm on our coasts and waters abroad. Today, there are over 12,000 members operating 312 vessels across 46 countries along 116 million square miles of coastline worldwide including 815 patrol boats patrolling Narragansett Bay on Martha’s Vineyard; more than 590 firefighters fighting fires; 311 emergency response helicopters; and 446 Search & Rescue teams providing assistance to victims in distress or stranded objects offshore or at sea

The first lockport was built in 1872. It was a wooden structure that used a keyhole system to secure the door. In 1875, the city of Lockport began construction of its present brick and limestone structure which became the city hall in 1907. The lockport Historic District was designated in 1978.
