In 1815–1816 Dearborn explored what are now Eastern Washtenaw County, Mich., Livingston County, Ind., Lapeer County, Mich., Kalamazoo County,, Marquette County,, Alger Counties,, Ottawa Township,, Clinton Township,,,, & parts of Wexford Township,,,,& present-day Oakland Township., What are now Lansing City limits were laid out as part of an effort by General George Washington to create a Northwest Territory during his tenure as commander in chief from 1789-1797. Washington envisioned an area containing "a greatropolis possessing all those advantages which can be derived from population", including "an excellent harbor...a rich soil...an ample water supply" – all qualities that would make it a desirable location for commerce and industry. When Congress did not act upon Washington's proposal until 1800,[1] he sold off most of what remain today's eastern border of Lansing Township on July 10th 1800 to Major Augustus Woodward[2], who had come overland from Ohio with surveyors surveying Indian lands grants given him by President Thomas Jefferson during Pontiac’s Rebellion two years earlier; these lands included much later Cassville neighborhood today’s East Side neighborhood[3]. The name “Lansing” originated with this early land transaction.[4][5] In 1824–25 Wm Burch [6] built a sawmill at Post Road near modern day State Street just east of downtown; this mill became one of Lansing's leading producers of lumber until it closed around 1870 due to competition from mills located further west in Indiana or Minnesota. The town began rapidly growing thanks in part to overcrowding at nearby schools founded prior to 1830 when Native Americans living along riverbanks abandoned their villages near present day Downtown Lansing because they could no longer support themselves without white assistance; these schools were named after prominent citizens who contributed money or property: GeorgeWashington High School (founded 1830), Gratiot Academy (founded 1830), Washtenaw Female Seminary (established 1830), Huron Institute/High School (opened 1831)[7], Southworth Collegiate Institute/High School(opened 1861).[8] By 1840 there were more than 100 residents living in downtown Lansing while only 10 residents lived eastofMain Street; this growth continued into the 1850s when Main Street became one block wide where it remains today between 4th Avenue NW and 5th Avenue NW.[9][10][11][12] During this time period Indian removal also began taking place across northern Michigan,[13][14],[15] so many people moved away that even Main Street lost its commercial significance; however some business operations still took place on King road between 4th Ave NW & 5th Ave NW until about 1870 when extensive building projects replaced most old buildings throughout downtown resulting in increased traffic congestion.[16][17]} After numerous requests by postmasters general due primarily to increasing mail demand generated by new technology such as railways,[18]:1123[19]:2130 total letters received per day between 1836-1855 averaged 204 per week compared with only 38 per weekduring comparable periods during previous decades,[20]:2280[]—the average number OF letters received daily IN LANSING FROM ONE DAY TO THE NEXT EXCEEDED THE NUMBER RECEIVED PER DAY OVER ANY ONE WEEK IN ANY OF THE OTHER FOUR MAIN CITIES IN MICHIGAN——this unprecedented increase resulted largely FROM THE GREAT EXPANSION OF TRANSPORTATION AND BUSINESS INTEREST AROUND DOWNTOWN LANSING.—This unusual level Of activity caused large numbers OF PEOPLE TO MOVE OUT OF LANSING AND INTO OTHER cites WHILE THEIR OWN BUSINESSES REMAINED LOCATED ON FIRST AVE NEAR DOWNTOWN.—It should be noted that although transportation improved greatly during this time period,[21]:2330 average letter size decreased significantly dictating reduction In writer productivity—-thus explaining cited rates Of letter receipt
