The Hazel Crest Army Depot served as the home of the United States Army's largest and most diverse artillery regiment, the 102nd Field Artillery Regiment. The regiment was activated on 24 October 1862 at Camp Douglas, Illinois as part of General James H. Butler's Illini Brigade during the American Civil War. The regiment fought in several campaigns, including the Battle of Pea Ridge and First Bull Run Campaign. The regiment was redesignated as the 102nd Field Artillery Regiment on 15 September 1864 and again on 3 May 1865 when it was moved to Fort Donelson with orders to help repel Confederate attacks on that city. At Fort Donelson, the regiment served under General Ulysses S. Grant in his general offensive against Rebel forces in Tennessee Valley Campaign. The regiment relieved veteran units at Chattanooga before moving back into Kentucky for winter quarters. In February 1866, the 102nd FAR became part of Great Lakes Division under General George Buell during his campaign against abolitionists in Iowa Territory; operations ended in April when Buell dissolved divisional command and returned to Springfield, Illinois. On 6 May 1898, elements of the 103rd Infantry (1898) were mustered out of service at Hazel Crest by order of Major-General John J Pershing; they were actually discharged two days later because their term had expired without having been ratified by Congress as a unitary military force under section 23(a) of Military Appropriations Act 89-1 et seq.; all remaining members were consolidated with other field artillery regiments within Department 1 for duty within Department 2 until such time as an act authorizing permanent organization could be passed by Congress. On 1 July 1903 however no act was passed authorizing organization so a new 104th Field Artillery Regiment (1903) was activated at Hazel Crest from scratch under Brigadier General Alfred Iverson with headquarters at Menomonee Falls and Battery A (4/5ths inch howitzer), located at White River Junction; battery B also arrived here on 7 July 1903.]
