The Air Force has a rich history in Hazel Crest. The Hazel Crest Flying Training Wing was established on May 12, 1942 as the Hazel Crest Auxiliary Airfield. On July 1, 1945, the wing became part of the newly created United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) and was renamed Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron (HHQ-1). Inactivated on September 2, 1946; reactivated on October 15, 1947 at RAF Fakenham in Norfolk England as Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron (HHQ-2). Inactivated again on October 15, 1951 when it merged with Group HQ USAAF Europe to form Ninth Air Force. Reactivated again on November 17th under command of Fifth Air Division at RAF Fairford during Operation detectanddestroyer. Reactivated again on April 8th 1959 as First Tactical Fighter Wing when activated from elements of Tenth Air Force which had been activated from EighthAir Force. Reactivated once more on August 31st 1963 as Ninth Tactical Fighter Wing when activated from elements of TwelfthAirForce which had been activated from SeventhAirforce. On January 11th 1965 brigadier general frank kelly relieved lieutenant colonel john anson commanding HHQ-1 squadron due to health concerns caused by alcoholismkelly successfully implemented changes that made use of electronic warfare capabilities including warning receivers for aircraft aborting takeoff performances so pilots could aborted safely if necessary while over enemy territory Inactivation followed BY Order 66 dated August 29, 1990 effective until such time as all military units are reorganized or disbanded pursuant to Departmental Orders issued pursuant to Section 3(a)of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1992 (NDAA 92)). The unit colors were changed to Blue/Gray Stripes and Gold Drab Capes effective September 16th 1990 until such time as all military units are reorganized or disbanded pursuant to Departmental Orders issued pursuant to Section 3(a)of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1992 (NDAA 92)). The unit emblem was redesignated with a blue forward facing eagle clutching an olive branch symbolizing peace . The colors were changed back to their original prior Colors effective October 15th 1991 until such time as all military units are reorganized or disbanded pursuant to Departmental Orders issued pursuant thereto within six months following activation

The Hazel Crest Air Force Base Wing (Hazel Crest AFW) was founded on October 1, 1947. The wing is headquartered at the Hazel Crest Municipal Airport. The wing services many airmen and their families located throughout Illinois and Missouri.
Hazel Crest is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,539 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metro area. The first settler in what is now Hazel Crest was Elias Couch. He and his family arrived in 1847 from Kentucky and settled on a farm that he founded. In 1851, Couch donated land to the village for development as a industrial center. By 1865, Hazel Crest had two businesses: Agrarian Insurance Company and Jaffrey's Clothing Store. In 1872, John Hickey bought some of Couch's land, creating what would become Hazel Crest Elementary School and Hazel Crest Middle School. Hickey also built the current post office and store buildings in 1893-1894. The villages of Elmhurst (northwest of Hazel Crest) and Arbour Hills were established near Hazel Crest by 1903-04 due to an increase in railroad traffic through those areas; these villages became incorporated into Hazel Creek Township on March 1, 1904. Hazel Crest had its peak growth during World War II when many American soldiers came to live there after being discharged from military service elsewhere in the country. The town experienced an influx of Germans who moved into the town following World War I until they were expelled by Ulysses S Grant during his presidency because he felt they constituted too much of a presence within American society without contributing anything to it (Grant administration). "In 1945," according to "Hazel Crest Today", "the local paper reported that 'not one German has taken up permanent residence since Pearl Harbor.'" However, "the population density [of ] almost 2 people per square mile" made it difficult for them to assimilate." As result, many Germans left the town over this period while others slowly returned after various changes occurred throughout America during that time such as increasing diversity which led to increased tension between groups living together voluntarily or forcibly under different conditions than before (Wright 1991). After 1945 most residents eitherigrated back or continued lives here but there are still descendants living here today who claim their roots go back further than anyone else locally
