Granite City was founded in 1868 by farmers who abandoned an agricultural community on the west side of Chicago to build a new town. The original name for the town was "Hennepin". The city's economy revolves around manufacturing and agriculture. The city has two hospitals and four clinics that provide medical care to residents of Granite City and surrounding towns and villages. Many have since passed away; however, one group remains active: Robert Wexler, emeritus professor at Duquesne University School of Law who served as CRS' head from 1945 until his retirement in 1990; he currently resides permanently in Granite City after moving back there following his retirement from teaching at Duquesne University In addition to its historical significance as a center for religious relief work during World War II,granitcity has been noted for its architecture dating back to 1868 when farmers abandoned an agricultural community on the west side of Chicago to build a new town named "Hennepin". The original name for the town was "Hennepin" because it had been chosen by General James Hennepin himself as one possible location for his new military post on Winnetka Road north-west of downtown Chicago due to its easy access from rolling farmland on both sides of Interstate 80. One important early architecturally significant building located within GranitCity limits were those erected by John Prentice & Sons shipyard near what is now known as Kedzie Avenue just south-east of Cicero Boulevard which between 1862-1864 served as base camp for Union forces marching across Lake County during their attempt to gain control over much western Michigan Territory prior to hostilities with Abraham Lincoln’s American Civil War army beginning September 12th 1861 In 1871 Alfred Burch developed land southeast corner Cicero Boulevard/Kedzie Ave between Harrison Street & North Side Road along what would become blocks 1st St./7th Ave.- becoming one important early developer associated with early civic infrastructure including streetlights & water mains while also developing later commercial areas such as this block alone stretching eastward along Kedzie Ave approximately unto Harrison Street having streets numbered 2nd St., 3rd St., 4th St., 5th St.– now blocks 7TH AVE.- thus forming today's most prolific shopping area within walking distance or driving distance employing present day zoning regulations
The first permanent settler in Granite City, Illinois was John Ackerman. He and his family arrived in 1831 from Indiana. They built a cabin on the riverbank and began to cultivate land. The Ackermans were followed by other pioneers, including George Stephenson, who founded Stephenson Manufacturing Company in 1835. The city was named aftergranite quarries located nearby. In 1861, Granite City became the capital of the newly created state of Illinois.
