The United States National Guard was first organized on April 24, 1790 as a military force to support the new nation. The guard's first Commander-in-Chief was George Washington. Over time, the guard has become one of the most popular and respected institutions in America. Today, there are more than 2100 National Guard units in the United States; across all 50 states and D.C., they provide law enforcement, disaster response, public health and welfare services, and can be called upon to respond to any emergency or national security situation. In Glendale Heights IL, we have an incredible history of giving back to our community through our national guard gift history. National Guard Unit 3486 donated their flagpole in 1937 to Glendale Heights VFW Post #541. Unit 541 provided financial assistance for the purchase of a new flagpole and installation costs which were covered by 3486. This is also the first time that a unit from Illinois had given back to their community this way! Unit 541 also contributed money towards purchasing a new playground for Glendale Heights Elementary School in 1984 which was then donated by Unit 3486. Finally, in 2010, 3486 gifted their entire collection of medals and awards from World War II (including items from Normandy) to Glendale Heights Memorial Park as part of Veterans Day commemoration program!

The National Guard was first established as a militia in 1792. Theorganized militia units were- the 1st Battalion of Riflemen, 2nd Battalion of Infantry, 3rd Regiment of Dragoons and 4th Regiment of Mounted Infantry. In 1816, the National Guard became an independent corps by order of President James K. Polk. On February 14, 1861, the National Guard was increased to 156,000 men by act of Congress and organized into 11 brigades under command of colonel generals. On November 16, 1861, President Abraham Lincoln called for all able bodied males aged 21 or older to enlist in service in preparation for the American Civil War. Enlistment totaled 9 million people within 6 months; however only about one quarter (24%) joined up because they could not find work or wanted to avoid war. The majority (71%) enlisted because they believed that their country needed them. On April 12 1865, after four years and six months of fighting with no end in sight, Union General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House near Petersburg Virginia without giving any ground to Confederate General George McClellan who had been leading the army from behind. The Confederacy lost over 50% its military manpower during the Civil War while Union forces gained more than three times that amount- some 54 million men overall!
Glendale Heights is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 21,032 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Cook County after Chicago. Glendale Heights is bordered by the city of Downers Grove to the south and west, Elmhurst to the north and east, and Streamwood to the northeast. The first residents of what is now Glendale Heights were groups of Indians who had settled there before 1800. In 1836, General James K. Polk set up a military encampment in what is now Glendale Heights as part of his campaign for president. The site that would become Glendale Heights was chosen because it was near two watercourses - one flowing into Lake Michigan and another running through Ridgefield Park which served as an important transportation artery connecting Chicago with other parts of Illinois. In 1857, local farmer George Peake donated land to build a town on what is now Glendale Heights Boulevard. The town's name was derived from its location: "Highlands" because of its high hillssides and "Heights" because it overlooked downtown Chicago). When communities began to form around them (such as Evanston), Peake donated more land; eventually all but 2/3rds of present-day Glendale Heights was developed over time by members of his community or their successors according to various plans or surveys made during that era . By 1900, development had stopped completely due largely to World War I shortages in lumber kept prices low while production increased; however some structures still stand today including Hartsfield-Jackson Airport Tower (now known as First Midwest Bank Building) and large apartment complexes such as Aon Center Tower (now known as Brookfield Place Tower). Some early developers included Crampton Brothers who built several thousand dollars worth of homes between 1915-1920; Edward Dolan builder who erected many large frame houses starting in 1916 followed by Wm Geddes whose businesses included grocery stores, gas stations and factories; Jens Clausen contractor who built several dozen small brick bungalows beginning c 1920s also including one still standing today named Glencoe Terrace after him
The village of Glendale Heights was laid out in 1892. It was named after the Glendale hills in west Phoenix, which were the site of a previous settlement. The first settler in Glendale Heights was George Wurlitzer, who built a cabin on the site in 1892. In 1903, the subdivision of Glenwood was organized and began to be developed. In 1916,Glendale Heights had its first school. In 1932, Glenda Jordan founded her own clothing store in the village.In 1951,Glendale Heights voted to become an independent city.
