Since the Marines were first deployed to Fox Lake in 1969, they have been providing a service to the community. The Marines are our local heroes and their presence has helped contribute to the economy, morale and social fabric of Fox Lake. The Marine detachment at Fox Lake is unique in that it is one of only two detachments of marines stationed in Illinois. The other detachment is located in Danville. This detachment provides amphibious assault protection for military installations throughout Cook County. Fox Lake is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,519 at the 2010 census. Fox Lake is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village had a population of 681 at the 2000 census. The Fox Lake Dam is located on the Fox River and was completed in 1928. The first Europeans to enter what is now Fox Lake were French traders led by Jacques Marquette. They traveled upriver from Green Bay and founded a trading post called "Nacogdoches" (now Racine) on July 10, 1679. Jesuit missionaries arrived in 1778 and began missionary work among the Ojibwe people near present-day Appleton and Lac Du Flambeau rivers. In 1814, James Krieger founded Krieger's Mill on the east side of Fox Lake while traveling through this region for his father Peter Krieger who ran a tannery at Nacogdoches. In 1835, John Goodyear established Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company on land northeast of what is now Fox Lake Village limits; Goodyear moved his operations there permanently in 1950 after acquiring an adjacent tract that included much of what are now downtownFoxLakeanda company headquarters until 1984 when they moved into their current building on State Street just west of I-94 which became their Corporate Headquarters since then! Fox Lake was a small, farming community in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The community was founded in 1871 by Nicholas Brady and his family. At its peak, Fox Lake had a population of 150 people. It declined after the Panic of 1893 and closed its doors in 1902. Today, the only remaining structure from the original community is a former post office building located at 1001 North First Street. The town of Fox Lake was named for Francis Xavier Fox, an American missionary who died in 1837 while preaching near what is now Fox Lake. In 1872, Nicholas Brady moved to Fox Lake with his wife and two children; they were among the first settlers in the area. Starting out as a small farmstead, Brady gradually increased his acreage until he had over 10 acres (4 hectares). By 1902, however, Brady's property had shrunk to just 5 acres (2 hectares). The town of Fox Lake ceased to exist when it merged with neighboring townships during World War I to form Cook County government under President Woodrow Wilson's new administrative plan. Fox Lake was first settled by the Potawatomi in the late 18th century. The early settlers were mostly farmers and their families. In 1847, the United States acquired land south of Fox Lake from Great Britain in what is now Ontario, Canada. This land was used to build Fort Dearborn which served as a U.S. military post during the war between America and Great Britain. The area around Fox Lake became known as Township 7 North in 1851 when it was organized into a township by the Illinois General Assembly. The township was renamed Fox Lake Township in 1907 after James Fenton, an American politician whoserved as a justice on the Illinois Supreme Court from 1915 to 1921.
