The Forest Park Air Force Base is home to the Illinois Air National Guard's 149th Fighter Wing, one of the most powerful air wings in the country. The wing was founded on July 20, 1942 and flew the North American P-51 Mustang into combat against Nazi Germany in World War II. In 1949, the wing moved to its current location at Forest Park and began training new pilots for the United States Air Force. Today, the 149th Fighter Wing flies more than 100 types of aircraft including Boeing 727s and Airbus A320s. The wing also conducts missions such as search and rescue, disaster relief, illegal drug enforcement and other counterterrorism operations. In addition to its aircraft, the 149th FW also operates two KC-135 Stratotankers and a Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon jet fighter squadron. In recent years, Forest Park AFB has been a popular tourist destination for those who love aviation. Since 2001, dedication has been given to building an addition to the forest park airstrip that will serve as a permanent home for both the 5th Bombardment Wing and ARL. The $36 million project is now complete and should soon be available for use by our flying community!
