Edwardsville is a small town in La Salle County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,854 at the 2010 census. It lies on the south side of the Illinois River and is bordered by the towns of Carbondale to the east and Normal to the north. Edwardsville is one of six communities in La Salle County that form St. Louis County. The Edwardsville community began as a post office in 1859, named for Colonel John Edwards, who had come from nearby Bloomington and established a trading post there in 1827. The first store opened in 1861, when George Withers moved from Bloomington and built a store near what is now Main Street. By 1870, Edwardsville consisted of just four houses and two stores; but it rapidly developed into an important commercial center due to its location on the river and its access to transportation routes including steamboats across the river to Minneapolis and Chicago. In 1875, local merchants founded The Daily Globe newspaper which became one of America's leading newspapers. The paper was purchased by The Tribune Company in 1896; but it continued to be published until 1925 when it merged with Hearst Corporation's American Journal Newspapers division (later called Journal-American).
