Edwardsville is located on the Illinois River, and its history dates back to 1853. At that time, the town was founded by Captain John Edwards and his family. The captain had come from New Orleans in 1824 to become a surveyor for the Illinois Territory. He found land for what would become Edwardsville and built a small cabin on the banks of the river. The first American coast guard station in Edwardsville was erected in 1853, and it served as a stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1859, Captain John Edwards died, and his son-in-law, James Bogan took over command of the coast guard station. Bogan served until 1865 when he became mayor of Edwardsville. In 1916, Captain Harry Cooks took over command of the coast guard station in Edwardsville. Cooks served until 1931 when he retired due to ill health. His successor was Lieutenant Commander Irving "Iron Man" Fenton who served until 1945 when he retired due to age restrictions. In 1951, Lieutenant Commander Clyde Wimmer replaced Fenton as commander of the Coast Guard Station at Edwardsville. Wimmer served until 1957 when he resigned due to illness; Lieutenant Commander Clarence Laughlin succeeded him as commander then serving until 1966 when he retired due to ill health again; Lieutenant Commander Forrest Swenson succeeded him as commander then serving until 1978 when Colonel Norma Pate assumed command of Naval Base Camp Edwardsville (NBCE) which occupies most of downtown Edwardsville

It was named after John Fenton Edwards, a judge who served in the Illinois Senate from 1857 to 1861 and as a delegate to the Harrison-Clay Convention in 1865.

Edwardsville is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 17,906 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Edwardsville was founded in 1834 by Christopher Edwards and James W. Pritchard as a small posttown on the east bank of the Kankakee River. It became an important railroad junction and manufacturing center during the mid-19th century, before becoming part of Kane County when it was created in 1871. The Edwardsville local government was first organized on November 3, 1834, under the name of "Newburgh Township". The original trustees were Christopher Edwards (founder), James W. Pritchard (founder), Daniel Harshbarger ( trustee for three years), and Joseph Buell (trustee for one year). On February 24, 1840, Newburgh Township was renamed "Edwardsville." By 1865, there were 486 residents in Edwardsville; by 1870 there were 1,045 residents; and by 1880 there were 1,811 residents. During the American Civil War (1861–1865), Edwardsville served as headquarters for General Gideon Welles's Union army camped along the Kankakee River west of Indianapolis during Operations Crossroads (November 1862). At least one resident served in general John A McClernand's Expedition against Thuggeeism throughout 1865 and early 1966. In 1892–93 five miles south of downtown Evansville on State Road 516 was built a large new cotton gin operated by Jno Hagin & Sons that replaced an earlier structure dating back to 1800 which had been destroyed by a fire two years earlier. In 1915 construction began on what would become known as "Blackhawk Hill", located immediately north of Blackhawk Lake on fertile land donated by lumberman Milton Senter from Knox County near Peoria. The hill later housed several businesses including Bloomington Furniture Company until it closed its doors in 1984 after fifty years service to Evansville merchants and citizens alike
