Edwardsville is a small town in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. Edwardsville is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Edwardsville were French traders and missionaries in 1763. The current site of Edwardsville was laid out by Nathan Bedford Forrest in 1839 as a wagon stop on the Sangamon River. In 1843, Sidney Sargent organized the first railroad through Sangamon County and named it for his friend General James K. Polk. In 1846, Jedediah Smith explored and mapified what is now Sangamon County near present-day Edwardsville. He named it after his relative Edward Woodson who had accompanied him on this trip from Missouri City, Texas to explore the Great Plains before settling in Kentucky Township west of Springfield on November 10th of that year. By 1860, over 100 African Americans had settled here including John Atherton (the first blacksmithing business owner), George Hogg (a merchant and land developer), Elijah Hicks (a Baptist preacher) and Thomas Wiggins (an attorney). The original town plat showed five lots with a total acreage of . On July 1st of that year they held their first election under state law which resulted in Wm Tatum being elected mayor with 55% of the vote over Abraham Lincoln’s 44%. This event marked an important milestone as voting rights for black citizens were not granted until later in that year when state legislators passed an Act providing for this purpose. After becoming one of the leading industrial towns in Illinois during its early years, Edwardsville lost its prominence during World War I due to military production obligations throughout most of America; however, during Prohibition Edwardsville became known as "The Drinkest Town In Illinois" because so much alcohol was produced hereabouts compared to other parts of the state. It reached its peak prosperity following World War II thanks to new technology investments by then-Mayor Harry Belmont which led to construction jobs within city limits while also increasing civic engagement via numerous cultural events such as Shakespeare readings series at Jackson Park downtown or free concerts at various venues around town.
