The Chicago Ridge Naval Post Office is a historic post office located at Chicago Ridge, Cook County, Illinois. It was built in 1909, and is a two-story, red brick building with a white limestone facade. It has been remodeled several times, most recently in 1978. The post office served as the headquarters of the Naval Post Office District until it was closed in 2006. The first naval post office on Chicago Ridge was established on September 20, 1846 by Rear Admiral John W. Davenport commanding the "Navy Yard" at Washington Park. The original building was used for mail services until 1852 when the Navy Yard moved to Pershing Square and the new post office was constructed at what is now Wells Fargo plaza. The first female postal employee was employed here in 1861 during the American Civil War; she was Mary Jourdan who worked at the then called Grosse Pointe Depot. In 1907, Rear Admiral George Dewey nominated Captain Arthur Swayne for appointment as First Assistant Director (Operations) of Posts and Telegraphs under Secretary of Commerce James M. Blanchard; Swayne received his commission on November 5th and took up his duties October 1st. During World War I Small Craft Patrol Squadron Five (later renamed Fleet Air Arm squadron Fifteen) operated from this building; they were housed in converted barracks until 1922 when they were relocated to Kelly Field southeast of downtown Chicago In 1938 Rear Admiral Charles Fenton recommended that an enlarged city mailing service be set up including ship-to-shore shipping using small boats supported by motor launches; this proposal resulted in development of organized waterway shipping which became known as “Navy Mail” USS Constitution Museum Milwaukee – USS Constitution Museum A dock landing craft provided by USS Milwaukee for delivery of Navy mails from United States Naval Station Miami Beach to USS Constitution Museum Milwaukee during WWII

The Naval Air Station at Chicago Ridge was the first naval air station in Illinois and it remained an active military installation until 1966. The Naval Air Station played a large role in the development of aviation in Illinois and its predecessor installations were responsible for training pilots and aircrews for duties including coastal patrols, convoy protection, search and rescue missions, as well asdropping supplies to remote Marines positions during World War II. In 1951, the Naval Air Station relocated to its current location on Goose Island after years of complaints from residents about the noise and smoke generated by the airport operations. The airport hosted various types of aircraft including bombers, transports, helicopters, amphibian planes and fighter jets during its days as a major player in Illinois aviation. Today, Chicago Ridge is home to one of three naval air stations in Illinois - Naval Air Station North Island - which is also responsible for providing training opportunities for pilots and aircrews from all over the state. The other two are Naval Air Station Memphis ( located south of Streator) and Naval Base Midway ( north of Springfield). Additionally, both Naval Air Station Memphis and Naval Base Midway offer ranges for shooting sports such as skeet Shooting and hunting rifles/ shotguns respectively.
Chicago Ridge is a small village in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 653 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Elmhurst–Skokie–Waukegan, IL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village is located on Chicago's North Side and its ZIP Code 51401. The name "Chicago Ridge" was given to the site by General David Dixon in 1857 as part of his land purchases on the Northwest Side of Chicago. Dixon had been ordered by President James K. Polk to clear away forested land on the Northwest Branch of the White River so that it could be developed as a city square and for military purposes. Dixon believed that this would create an important artery connecting Chicago with other parts of Illinois and Indiana; he also intended to make sure that Chicago's growth did not outpace that of neighboring villages or towns on his new acquisition. In 1871, General John Dickey arrived in what became known as "Dixon'sland". He purchased from General Dixon about two-thirds of what is now Chicago Ridge and built a sawmill, grist mill, storehouse and home there for his family and employees. The town plat was filed in 1872, but no action took place until 1874 when Fayetteville Township (later Skokie Township) formed from Northwestern Districts outside Cook County while still under federal jurisdiction due to issues surrounding Mexican American voting rights during the American Civil War (1861-1865). When Fayetteville Township became local government within Cook County it adopted a plat for "Chicago Ridge", which included all present-day Kane County except for portions west of I-95 (and including most parts of Elmhurst). This made Chicago Ridge distinct from other villages within Cook County which were platted after their incorporation into local governments rather than taking such steps; these villager plats generally reflect boundaries acquired by purchase or annexation subsequent to their incorporation into local government.—Ralph Jaffe
