Chicago Ridge is a small, rural town located in Kane County, Illinois. The community was founded in 1871 by Irish immigrants who settled on the ridge above Chicago. The name "Chicago Ridge" comes from the fact that the ridge overlooks Chicago's first city limits. Today, Chicago Ridge is a bedroom community for the city of Chicago and its suburbs. It has a population of just over 2,000 people and is home to two churches and one school. The original settlers were farmers who grew corn, wheat, potatoes and other vegetables on their farmsteads along the ridgeline. By 1900, however, most of the original residents had migrated away to larger cities or states within Illinois or Indiana. With few exceptions, all of Chicago Ridge's current inhabitants are descendants of these original settlers. The community has experienced many changes throughout its history. In 1915, when an oil well was discovered near Warsaw in Kane County, someone suggested naming the new town after this discovery instead of Chicago because Warsaw was thenthe county seat and most people in the area thought that would be more appropriate than "Chicago Ridge." Unfortunately for everyone involved - including those who wanted to keep the name - this idea never materialized and Ottawa County became Warsaw again in 1915 (a change that no one seems to remember). In 1954, changes took place at nearby Clintonville when construction began on Interstate 55 which crossed through Kane County from south to north; this created long-term tension between Clintonville and Chicago Ridge due to alleged roadblocks set up by local officials attempting to stop development within their respective communities! After years of skirmishing - with blood spilled both ways - both communities finally merged into one municipality during a referendum held in 1966 under new leadership: John Ireland (Clintonville) being chosen as mayor while Harry McNamara (Chicago Ridge) served as vice mayor. With so much change taking place within its boundaries over such a short period of time it can be difficult for anyone living inside Toronto's City Limits to gain an accurate understanding or comprehension of what it means specifically when looking out their windows onto Ridgewood Drive...or even across Dearborn Avenue at our high school! However without any real information currently available about what life is like outside our walls we feel it necessary provide some insight into what life may be like if we did actually leave them behind...albeit temporarily!
