Chicago Ridge is a small, rural community in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It lies on the east side of the Chicago River and is bounded by State Route 53 to the north, Fox Valley Road to the south-southeast, and Interstate 95 to the west. The name comes from a ridge that runs along part of its edge. The first settlers in what is now Chicago Ridge were farmers who arrived around 1836. They named their community after a ridge running through their land. By 1850, there were only about 30 people living in Chicago Ridge. But because it was located on an important shipping route connecting Lake Michigan with the Indiana Peninsula, it continued to be populated for many years. In 1892, Chicago Ridge became one of six towns in Cook County that were merged into the city of Chicago. However, because most residents still lived close to their homes and businesses, little change took place until World War II when much of the original growth came from new housing developments built near downtownChicago.
