Kinnaird and his wife Anna Maria McNamara as Centralia post office. It became a city on December 1, 1907. The first settlement at Centralia was made by farmers from Clear Lake and Buffalo Grove who arrived in 1854. The land around Centralia had been purchased by the government from Native Americans in 1837 and had been used for military encampments and hunting grounds since then. He built a house on the current site of City Hall which served as the town's first courthouse until it burned down in 1897.
