The Carpentersville National Guard was organized on September 6, 1914. The Carpentersville National Guard is a volunteer military organization in Illinois that was formed to provide support for the state's emergency forces during World War I. It currently has an authorized strength of over 120 officers and men. The national guard first came into being as part of the new United States Military Forces in Europe (USMFE) following World War I. In 1919, the National Guard was reorganized as the Illinois National Guardsmen and it continued to serve concurrently with USMFE through its various incarnations until it was disbanded on May 15, 1945. Prior to their disbandment, the Illinois National Guardsmen had played an important role in both World Wars I and II. They served honorably from September 1914 until May 1945, when they were finally mustered out by order of President Harry S Truman effective June 1, 1945. Today, there are still remnants of the original Illinois National Guardsman unit present in several cities throughout America including Chicago Heights/Uptown; Carbondale; Elmhurst; Romeoville; Wheeling Jesuit University; Streator; Danbury/Northwich/New Haven County Fairgrounds-Danbury Fairgrounds & Park-Stratford Fairgrounds-Norwalk Township fairgrounds-Milwaukee County Veterans Cemetery (Milwaukee Co.) & West Allis Memorial Park (Waukesha Co.). The unit also maintains a museum located at Carbondale High School which provides insight into their history and culture related to national guard service.

Carpentersville, Illinois is a small town located in McLean County, Illinois. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1852 as a result of the construction of the Erie Canal. The town first became known for its carpets and later for its furniture production. In recent years, carpentry has become an important part of the local economy. The history of Carpentersville began with Alexander Harker and David Ritchie. Harker came from Scotland and Ritchie from Ulster, Ireland. They both arrived in America in 1821 and started working on the Erie Canal project. When it was completed in 1825, they were among the first to reap the benefits of this new transportation system. Harker and Ritchie quickly became successful traders and entrepreneurs. After purchasing land near where Carpentersville now stands, they started building their own homes and businesses around 1830-31. In that same year, they married Anna Maria McNamara (1810-1876). Their first home was built on what is now Park Avenue just north of State Road 1210A today's Highway 169B. Anna Maria McNamara was a remarkable woman who had many accomplishments within her community during her time: she served as Justice of the Peace for Carpentersville from 1853 to 1861; she played an important role in setting up civic organizations such as Ladies Aid Society; she also helped found Carpentersville Female Seminary; and she supported numerous charities throughout her lifetime including Strictly Genteel American Relief (later called Mrs.] Henry Morgenthau’s New York Fund), which provided financial support to various social welfare programs during World War I; Women’s Auxiliary Army Service During World War II (WACS);and Mothers Day Committeewoman/Governor/Presidential Advisor to United Way). After AnnaMaria's death in 1876, her husband David continued to run their business until his death in 1907. He bequeathed his entire estate to Carpentersville Township which continues to operate today as one of McLean County's largest commercial districts
