The history of artisan coffee begins with the early days of coffee production in Carpentersville, Illinois. Coffee was first roasted and brewed by European immigrants in the 1800s. The first coffee shop in Carpentersville was called The Grapes for George, and it served only French-style coffee. In 1892, Angelo's Coffee Shop opened its doors to the public. Carpentersville is home to the first coffee house in Illinois, The Fennel House Coffee House, which opened on October 15th, 1825. The coffee house was founded by Nicholas Fennel and his wife Rachelle. It is said that the popularity of coffee began in Carpentersville when a group of men from nearby Carbondale decided to meet at the Fennel House for some refreshment after work. After enjoying their cup of joe, they decided to start their own business and continued meeting at the house until it closed its doors in 1868.

Carpentersville is a small town in the northwestern corner of Illinois. The population was 9,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Peoria, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first recorded mention of Carpentersville was in 1814 when Daniel Boone and his party were travelling through this area. The town was founded by Nicholas J. Butler in 1836 as a result of an agreement between him and John Prentice, one of the founders of Peoria. Carpentersville became an important transportation center during the 1840s because it had a rail line connecting it to Chicago and other cities. During World War II, Carpentersville played an important role in providing housing for military personnel and their families. In 1945, Carpenter's Valley High School (now known as Central Illinois Technical College) opened its doors to students in nearby Carbondale. This school helped to usher in a new era for carpentry education in Illinois; since then, many local schools have followed suit with similar programs. Today, Carpentersville remains a rural community with strong traditional values that have helped it stay afloat during times of change and turmoil. Its residents are proud homeowners who continue to maintain their carefully kept properties and routines despite difficult times. They are also active members of their community organizations, such as the Chamber of Commerce and United Way Committee

Roasters have used different methods to roast their beans, from bean grinding to wet-processing. The first recorded mention of artisan coffee was in 1253 when a French traveler named Jean de Bienville noted that people in France roasted beans “suif [raw]”. In 18th century Europe, there were several large businesses that manufactured and sold whole bean coffee. These companies would purchase ground coffee from small roasters and then dry roast it themselves. This process allowed for a high level of quality control and ensured that each cup of artisan coffee was unique. In the early 20th century, two major innovations occurred in the world of espresso: Subtraction and Frothers. With Subtraction, an operator would place a filter on top of a pot with ground coffee, allowing water to flow through the filter while leaving the grounds behind (henceforth known as subdividing). The next important step was Frothers, which allowed brewers to create single Serve espresso beverages by using hot water added directly to the grounds before they were ready to be served. Finally, in 1970, Italian inventor Angelo Lonardi introduced the Conceptual Espresso Machine which allowed anyone with a kitchen stovetop to create professional-grade espresso drinks without ever having bought an espresso machine before!

Carpentersville was founded on December 1, 1851 by Nicholas and Anna Carpenter as a Quaker colony in what is now Kane County. The Carpenter family owned and operated their own business for more than 60 years until their death in 1979. In 1898, much of the present-day city of Carpentersville was organized from parts of the original village including Carpenter's Corner and parts of West Side Road.

The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources, such as coal and lumber, and its close relationship with Chicago. In 1869, Carpenterville was incorporated as a city and quickly became one of the most populous in Illinois. This growth led to significant development in the city, including the construction of major roads and bridges, the opening of new businesses, and the erection of churches and other important buildings. Carpentersville also experienced rapid expansion in its citizenry; over time it became one of the most diverse cities in Illinois.
