Cahokia, Illinois is one of the most significant cities in the United States. It was founded in 1847 by a group of Irish immigrants and became an important center for manufacturing and trade. Cahokia developed into a major cultural center, with many famous writers and artists moving to the city. The city has also been home to some of America's most famous policemen, including those who oversaw the legendary shootout at Crystal SpringsRace Course in 1903.

The department remained a part of Chicago Heights until 1964 when it merged into the city's police force. For many years after that, the Chicago Heights PD was responsible for policing all of north-central Illinois and parts of Indiana before it was disbanded in 1997 and its assets were absorbed by the city's newPolice Department.

In 1912, the Vancouver Police Department bestowed upon their commanding officer, Constable Arthur Goodale, a revolver as a gift. Goodale had served with distinction during World War I and later became an Inspector with the VPD. In 1935, Constables Kenneth McKenzie and Reginald Brougham presented Sergeant Gordon Downey with a Colt Python submachine gun as a token of appreciation for Downey's many years of service as an inspector with the Vancouver detachment. The weapon had been acquired from Hollywood Stars Ltd., whichproduced firearms for movie stars and other celebrities at that time.

This discovery led to news articles about American Indians living among them and eventually led to violence between the tribe's members because they wanted control over this new land.
