Burbank, Illinois is a city located in the U.S. state of Illinois. The population was 38,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County and is one of the most populous cities in Illinois. The area that became Burbank was first settled by Native Americans in the 18th century as part of what is now Northwest Indiana Territory. The first European to visit what is now Burbank was Pierre Marquette on his trip from Green Bay to Chicago in 1679. In 1785, fur trader and explorer Jacques Marquette founded Fort Dearborn near what is today Burbank after finding high water holes thereabouts. By 1800, much of Northwest Indiana had been bought by Spain for $2 million dollars and moved westward into present-day Illinois as part of their vast Louisiana Purchase lands. In 1847, during the Mexican–American War (1846-48), General Zachary Taylor's Army invaded California and destroyed Mexico's last military stronghold north of Baja California—the Presidio de San Francisco de la Laguna—gaining control over much of New Mexico and Arizona as well as large blocks of Texas land along the Rio Grande River valley. In response, Governor Manuel López de Santa Anna ordered General Winfield Scott to march south from Tucson with 10,000 men to retake California; however Scott turned back at Chihuahua City on July 27th due to severe weather conditions including hailstones totaling 2 inches (51 mm) size that fell out of clear sky and smashed against buildings; no deaths were reported among soldiers or civilians although many were injured including 1st Lt John Cushing who lost his right eye because he was hit by a piece dislodged from a building while marching under heavy artillery fire just east of Tucson mountains). Although Chihuahua City lay within Mexican territory at that time, it became an American outpost after US President James Kossuth issued an Executive Order on September 10th 1847 creating US Military District No 5 encompassing all Mexican territories east thereof “until such time as our government may be replaced by an organization chartered by Congress” which effectively placed it within US hands following successful negotiations between then-President Polk and local chieftain Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna culminating with Kossuth's order formalizing this arrangement – thus becoming America's first official Territorial Town/City in Arizona territory! On November 14th 1847 boundaries for Military District #5 were proposed for presentation to Secretary OF War Jefferson Davis who approved them two days later! A year later on March 3rd 1850 Major General Jesse Fayette Butler arrived at Fort Dearborn with 6 Companies Missouri Militia Infantry Regiment newly organized from sections away from St Louis MO under Brigadier General George Crook & Captain Abel Pacheco & Lt Col David Ziegler & Capt Benjamin Hancey& Lieuts Ludwig Von Steuben & John Teague etc., assigned primarily To support Butler in establishing garrison duty here rather than attacking Mexicans across central Mexico!!! After taking possession of various Indian villages situated westward along Iowa River Valley--including Cahokia Mounds Site--General Butler decided to build more permanent stockade defenses around Fort Dearborn instead being confined largely to raiding Mexican villages located near present day Decatur IL until relieved by troops under Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Roe on April 9th 1850 when finally effective garrison duties could be conducted outside months long patrols!! Ultimately about 150 people died during construction projects associated with fortification program only 17% attributed directly to enemy action though most resulted from accidents related to winter weather conditions!! On October 15th 1853 Burbank residents met together “to form themselves into a town council” pursuant to act entitled "An Act for organizing a Township" passed by house 3rd Session January 25th 1854!
