Burbank, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 67,651 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Chicago after Chicago Heights. The city is located on the Fox River and has a total area of 26 square miles (71 km²). BURBANK – History and Overview Burbank was platted in 1853 by John Pemberton and named for his friend Burlingame Halliday who lived there at the time. In 1873, he sold part of the town to Lorenzo Dowling for $1,500. Dowling built a gristmill on State Street that still stands today. In 1877, Burbank became an incorporated village. On January 1st of each year since then it celebrates its incorporation anniversary with a parade through downtown streetsides throughout the city ending with an open house at City Hall where residents can see all of their newly elected officials from that year up until present day! The history of this small community goes back to when it was founded as an unincorporated village adjacent to what is now known as Evanston on Deerfield Road east of Intervale Avenue. At that time Deerfield Road consisted only of two intersecting roads which were traveled by horseback riders on either side of these two trails running parallel to one another! Today you can find remnants of both these trails still visible today just off Hennepin Avenue near Woodbine Drive! The first settlement in what would become Burbank occurred about ten miles (16 km) northeast from where we stand today when James Waring erected a log cabin on land grants given him by General David Dixon during their march from Springfield via Burlington to meet General John Montgomery near Mount Carmel! That same year James Waring purchased additional land grants totaling foursquare miles (10 km²) surrounding what would later become Burbank giving rise to our current location! This initial pioneer group included Waring’s wife Martha Jane; her brother-in-law Jabez Pease; George Washington Schoeninger; Solomon Steele; Israel Harris; Elisha Goodrich and others who settled here over time primarily because they found good farmland available nearby including: Fenton Hills (later Naperville), Lawndale (later Wheeling), Elmhurst (later Crystal Lake), Cicero (now Joliet), Maywood (now Chicago Heights) and more recently North Suburban Center in Streamwood IL also located within our boundaries . . . . Today we continue this rich history by celebrating our incorporation into Village status every January 1st as part of National Village Day!. Our celebration includes parades through downtown streetsides followed by an open house at City Hall which features all local elected officials from that year up until present day!
